I will be in Stuttgart for two weeks in June (first visit to Germany). I was wondering if it would be too ambitious to visit Tubingen and the Bebenhausen monastery in a single day. Would the answer differ if we used public transportation from Stuttgart, as compared to renting a car? Lastly, if we were to rent a car, would a day trip to Tubingen and the Hohenzollern Castle be too much for one day?

I was over there last year and loved Tubingen. The area around the river and the punt boats are so atmospheric. Also the market square in the town. I remember the slanty street...We also did Hohenzollern which was neat. We took a tour with our German friends but got lost in the German. Luckily we were in that entry hall with the geneology painted on the walls and that kept us busy.
We also spent time in a spa in Bad Urach, which was very nice. We went in the evening, after dinner, which was a nice way to wind down for sleep.

As abalada has already said, you can easily do all your options.
However, I always like approaching Bebenhausen Monastery from the north through the forest on some smaller roads, it%26#39;s just more atmospheric, than from Tuebingen, and a pleasant drive through the forest. Along that way is the Ritter SPORT chocolate factory in Waldenbuch, great aroma over the town, and there is a small museum on chocolate manufacture there, and an excellent art museum on art in the form of squares, their candy bar shape, plus a large sales room at discounted prices. (Nice contrasts for the day, modern art and ancient architecture.) Also, the museum of what I would call everyday life in the old palace is interesting.
I would never visit Tuebingen on a Sunday when the shops are closed, they have a lot of interesting nontourist shops, such as the CD store that sells bicycle seat covers in the shape of animal heads, with ears, etc. And when in Tuebingen, eat at Die Forelle about a block east of the Rathaus, very good local food.
For some other interesting day trips, just click on my name and look at my hundreds of forum posts for this area.

Thank you all for your helpful advice. You%26#39;ve given me plenty to think about. And I appreciate the tip about visiting Tübingen on a Saturday, rather than a Sunday.
