What to see around Nuremberg?

We%26#39;re flying into Frankfurt in the beginning of July and want to stay in Nuremberg for 3-4 nights on our way to Prague. We%26#39;ll have a rental car. What towns would you suggest for day trips around Nuremberg? I was thinking Bamburg, Rothenberg, Regensburg, but we probably won%26#39;t be able to see them all plus Nuremberg in this limited time. We%26#39;ll have a 8 year old with us, so will have to take it a bit slower and visit at least one castle :). If we visit Regensburg, is it better to make it a day trip from Nuremberg or stay there overnight on our way to Prague? Also, what part of town is best to stay in for good access to city center as well as highways?

Guess I would look at it differently. From Frankfurt to Rothenberg (depending on time of arrival, etc), maybe spend the night there, then on to Nurnberg. Day trip to Bamburg, and when ready to leave Nurnberg head to Regensburg on way to Prague. There are several nice hotels reviewed on TA. I have stayed at the Hotel Kaiserhof am Dom several times (link below). In the altstadt, right across the pedestrian platz from St. Peter%26#39;s cathederal. Great view (ask for room(s)facing the church).

In Regensburg or on way to, you can go to Kelheim and take the short (20 minute) cruise down the Danube to the Monastery at Weltenburg:

boat tours schedule is on left side index (ship tours). Ride the boat from Kelheim, enjoy the monastery, have lunch and ride back.

You can also see the liberation hall in Kelheim:

Kelheim is only a 15 minute drive to the southwest of Regensburg.
