Car Rental from Munich to Meersburg / Friedrichshafen..

Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible for me to rent a car in Munich and return at Meersburg or Friedrichshaden?

I am planning a one day drive from Munich to Lake Constance area.

Which town would stand a better chance for me to return the car there?

Friedrichshafen which is fairly large has car rentals at the airport for certain, and probably also downtown. Meersburg is small so there might not be any rental agencies. Just check with the auto rental agency you%26#39;re interested in using where their offices are. From Meersburg, by taking the car ferry to Konstanz, you could also return the car there.

Would it make more sense to go by train?

|||

You can%26#39;t go to Meersburg by train.

As to where to return the car, where do you plan to go from Lake Constance? If north, Friedrichshafen or Lindau are places to return the car. If Switzerland, then Konstanz.

I meant train to Friedrichshafen (or Lindau.). I know Lindau is accessible by train from Munich and is at Lake Constance. in my opinion, it is as nice as Meersburg and has that medieval flavor. You can take 1/2 hr. ferry to Bregenz if you want a boat ride.

If all you want to do is see a city or town center or two, certainly. But if you want to see all the other excellent things not in those places, a car is almost a neccessity, especially if you want to accomplish a lot in a day. Trains don%26#39;t stop at those attractions, but at train stations which are located for the residents%26#39; ease of transportation, not for tourists visiting places. Try visiting the lovely pilgrimage church at Birnau by public transportation or the prehistoric fishing village on stilts in the lake, they both are fairly close to a train station, but then you waste a lot of time walking to and from them, which could have been better spent seeing other things. The same could be said for Friedrichshafen itself, the palace is a long walk from the train station, and although I%26#39;m sure that there are buses, bus information isn%26#39;t as readily available as rail information. And then of course, you also have to wait for the train (or bus) to take you to and from those places at its schedule, not yours.

you can also go from munich to meersburg by train, it takes you 3,5 - 4 hours

|||

Sorry, caro, but there is no train in Meersburg. You can go from Munich by train to Friedrichshafen , via Lindau by Allgaeu Express, and then take the bus or ferry to Meersburg. You are correct, it does take about 4 hours.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and inputs.

I would really love to stay at Bodensee longer but perhaps it has to be next time as I will be covering 4 countries in this vacation.

Now the challenge is to see how costly it will be to return the car at Friedrichshaden or Konstanz. Is Konstanz part of Germany? The last I read on Wikipedia that it is.

Since I am travelling in mid August, would I be able to get a fairly accurate rate if I enquire now?

Yes, Konstanz is in Germany right at the border with Switzerland. Normally there is no additional charge for renting in one German town and dropping off in another German town, at least for the major car rental firms.
