Hi all,
I am planning to travel to Friedrichshafen from Munich as part of my tour of Europe in Aug.
We do plan to stay at Friedrichshafen or Überlingen for 1 night before taking a train to Zurich.
Which town would be good to spend a night in? Can anyone kindly recommend? What are the other areas we can stay in?
What are the activities we can try out in the Bodensee area?

Personally, I would overnight at Meersburg ( www.meersburg.de ), the loveliest town on Lake Constance which also has Germany%26#39;s oldest castle. There are some other things you can visit there in town such as the bible museum, the city museum, and a prince%26#39;s palace. Close to it is a recreated Stone Age (?)village on stilts (open air museum, Pfahlbaumuseum); the lovely church at Birnau; and you can take boat trips to the garden isle of Mainau or Konstanz easily, among other places.
My next favorite town on the lake would be Lindau ( www.lindau.de ), the old town on the island is quite nice. There are easily several weeks of excellent things to do at and close to the lake, so you certainly won%26#39;t run out of things to do. You can also access the mountain tops in Austria or Switzerland if desired, but perhaps you will be visiting more of the Alps.
Information on Lake Constance can be found at www.bodensee-tourismus.com .

My favourite hidden gem on the Bodensee is indeed Überlingen. The big disadvantage of Meersburg is the lack of train connections. For whatever reason the railway does a detour further inland and does not touch the town.
Activities? You%26#39;ll bite the lower end of your back for not having more time...
Boat cruises on the lake. The boats run on a regular schedule and take you almost everywhere.
Friedrichshafen: Zeppelinmuseum, if you are into technical stuff.
Unteruhldingen and Birnau have already been mentioned, both are close to Überlingen.
Meersburg old town and palaces.
Island of Mainau with the gardens, butterfly house etc.
Salem monastery and monkey rock.
Konstanz, old town, museums, aquarium.
Along the Untersee, the island of Reichenau with three medieval monasteries (UNESCO World HGeritage), Arenenberg palace on the Swiss side, Stein am Rhein with its painted houses...
Just to name a few things to do. There are more. For a trip to Bodensee I%26#39;d recommend staying a week or longer.

Meersburg lies 3km away from the closest railway station if taking a train. A taxi isn%26#39;t that espensive between them. Otherwise it is served by buses from other places on the lake as well as boats. On the otherhand, Meersburg is directly connected with Mainau and Konstanz by boat, while Ueberlingen is not, and while Meersburg is on a main part of the lake, Ueberlingen lies on a smaller arm, the Ueberlingener See. Ueberlingen is a pleasant town, but my wife who has lived on the lake would always prefer Meersburg or Lindau as I do.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I might be renting a car from Munich to Lake Constance and stay over for 1 night.
I will return the car at the town and take rail to Zurich
Which town would have a better/direct connecting rail to Zurich?
My possible locations are Meersburg, Friedrichshafen, Uberlingen and Lindau.

At Meersburg and Friedrichshafen, just take the ferry across the lake and you will be in Konstanz (in the first case) which shares its town border with Switzerland, or from Friedrichshafen the ferry takes you to Romanshorn, Switzerland, and continue on by train. Of course, you can get to Zurich from any of the four mentioned towns. Just go to www.bahn.de , and change to English near the top of the page, and try out the connections from each of these places to Zurich and see which is most convenient for you.

I am sorry if this question has been posted before.
Is there a website to show the ferry services of Lake Constance? I would need to check how much it cost to ferry a rented car from Meersburg / Friedrichshafen to Konstanz.

www.sw.konstanz.de will have information on the ferries, but only in German, where you can see the details. There is no car ferry from Friedrichshafen to Konstanz (it is Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn, Switzerland), and the other car ferry is Meersburg to Konstanz. However, you can take a passenger catamaran between Friedrichshafen and Konstanz ( www.der-katamaran.de ).
