Hello, I will be arriving with my wife in Munich at noon and will be flying out of Munich airport that evening at 10:50pm. I would love to get to Neuschwanstein, but all the tours are all day tours. Does anyone know if I take the train out there, is it possible to see the castle in the late afternoon and then get an evening train back? Thank you for any help.

Nope, sorry, that is not nearly enough time. It takes 40 minutes from Munich to the airport, then getting there enough time before your flight will use up too much time.

I think that would be a stretch. You would really be pushing it if you use public transportation. I would probably rent a car and that way have a bit more control and less time getting to and from. I think you can get from the airport to Neuschwanstein in about 2 hours driving. So, leaving the airport at 1:00, 4 hours to and from and 2 hours for a tour around would be back in plenty of time. Public transportation would be by train to Fuessen, and looks like about a 3 hour trip each way, which pushes your luck.

Hi,
I have to agree with %26quot;apecs999%26quot; that it is not a good idea to try to see Neuschwanstein. Keep in mind the opening hours of the castle depending on when you are going. One traffic jam and...
Just an option if you%26#39;re interested... %26quot;Mad%26quot;King Ludwig%26#39;s Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) is only an hour from Munich. Easy to reach by public transportation or even easier if you rented a car for the day. Easiest would be pick up/return to the airport.
Just my opinion, the interior of Herrenchiemsee is much better than Neuschwanstein. Amazing!

Hope this helps.

wow, thanks for all the insight. We will be changing our plans to be able to spend the whole day at the castle then. Thank you all very much. Forums are a great thing.

In addition to touring the castles (we toured Hohenschwangau castle too), we really enjoyed wandering around the immediate area - up to Mary%26#39;s bridge, to the lake behind the castles, etc. So having extra time is a good thing.
