Traffic in Munich

Wanting to visit Dachau in the morning %26amp; then travel through Munich to Burghausen, we will have car so was wondering what traffic will be like mid day, if it will greatly add to our travel time.

Thanks

Munich is a large city, easy to get around in. I would try to be headed out of the city by 3pm though.

You don%26#39;t have to travel THROUGH Munich, you can bypass it to the north and east on the autobahn, which isn%26#39;t even out of your way.

Thanks, I wondered if the Autobahn went around Munich, does it stay moving at most times of the day, here in Toronto our main highway can come to a standstill very quickly with all the traffic %26amp; a 1/2hr drive could very quickly become 1.5hr drive.

I can%26#39;t speak about Munich specifically, but my experience has always been that the traffic will always keep moving on autobahns or similar roads. (It may slow down considerably where large numbers of cars are entering or exiting, especially at rush hours.) But if there is construction things can be very slow, or worse yet, for a bad accident, it%26#39;s possible to be parked for over an hour. And also at the beginning of holidays, autobahns can come to a standstill not being able to handle the volume of traffic.

During the middle of the day you probably will be fine, I wouldn%26#39;t worry about it unless you have to be somewhere at a specific time, then perhaps leave a half hour to an hour earlier. There are also radio stations that give frequent traffic advisories (in German of course) of where the jams are, and options on the car radio to have such advisories cut into what else is being listened to.

If possible rent your car with a GPS device, it will then inform you of any major traffic problems on your route and reroute you to a better route.

In general 8-10 Am to the city and 3-6 Pm out of the city are congested.

Thanks for your suggestions, we are borrowing a car so unsure if it has GPS, on plus side my BF is German so he can understnd the signs %26amp; taffic reports %26amp; will generally know were we are going - he just isn%26#39;t a planner so me asking him these questions annoys him %26amp; I like to know this kind of thing!

We just returned from Munich and had a rental car at a central Munich Hotel. We had no problems getting in and out of Munich at any time of the day. It is typical big city rush hour traffic, but it always moves. We did have a GPS however and my wife and I both commented that it could be difficuly trying to find your way with just maps. Several city streets change names frequently as you travel through the city and with the long German names several street names look similar at a quick glance. We also noticed that street names are not always obvious as you approach intersections. We brought our portable Garmin GPS with us and it worked out great.
