Hi,checked train schedule/price on Bahn.de, would like to know if there is economy way to buy the ticket as Mainz and Stuttgart are in 2 different Province? we would like to take advantage of the lander ticket for day trip to Heidelberg and Tubingen.
Also which train station to use in each of the two cities? we will staying in Hiton in both cities. thanks in advance for your advise!

First, the Hilton in Stuttgart is in a remote location not readily accessable by public transportation being close to the stadium and fairgrounds. The closest means of access by public transportation is the S-bahn S-1 at Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, or whatever they have renamed this stop (first stop past Bad Cannstatt). Taxis probably are easier to get at Bad Cannstatt. Bad Cannstatt is also served by regional trains.
The time to visit Heidelberg would be on the way between Mainz and Stuttgart.
Do a search on the Germany forum using the terms: abalada train Mainz Stuttgart . I believe he has mentioned a way to use the local transportation network of Heidelberg/Mannheim (or perhaps it was the Rheinland-Pfalz Lander ticket) to get to Mannheim/Heidelberg from Mainz, and then the Baden-Wuerttemberg Lander ticket will be valid to Stuttgart.

thanks, I remember reading something about train from Mainz to Stuttgart or HD, but can%26#39;t find it anywhere, just check again, no luck, let%26#39;s hope abalada will answer my post.
As for the Hilton in Stuttgart, we are taking advantage of the reward nights we have earned, is it really bad from transportation point of view? we wouldn%26#39;t might for one more train transfer but will not stay there if it%26#39;s non train accessable. please advise, thanks.

The Hilton is probably a 5-10 minute walk from the S-bahn. It is also near two bus lines that run to the Bad Cannstatt station, and several U-bahns are probably a 5-10 minute walk away or accessable by bus. You are also very close to the Mercedes Benz Musuem. However, most hotels in Stuttgart are only 1-2 minutes away from U-bahns or S-bahns. If the U-11 is running, it will terminate very close to the hotel, but it usually operates only for the Spring and Fall beer festivals, and possibly for some sporting events.

I would do Heidelberg on the route from Mainz to Stuttgart as it is more or less in the middle. Store your luggage in one of the lockers at Heidelberg Hbf (main train station).

Use the Happy-Weekend-Ticket. EUR 37,00 for 2-5 persons.
Does not cover the buses in Mainz.
But the trams and buses in Heidelberg and Stuttgart.
2. Mo-Fr if you want to start before 9am
Buy RMV tickets to Weinheim. EUR 13,00 per person (RMV price level 17).
And a Baden-Württemberg Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons) to cover the rest of the trip.
Give Weinheim as a via station.
Earliest connections you can use departs at 07:39 from Mainz Brückenplatz. I.e. a connection where you are past 9am in Weinheim.
3. Mo-Fr if you want to start past 9am
Buy a Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket (EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons). *)
And a Baden-Württemberg Ticket (EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons).
Give Ludwigshafen as via station. The route via Weinheim is not covered as it goes through the state Hesse in between.
*) not sure if you can buy a Rhineland-Palatinate Ticket from the bus drivers. You could it buy the before from a ticket machine or at the counter (+ EUR 2,00).
Mainz
Your hotel is next to the bus stop Brückenplatz.
mainz.de/C1256D6E003D3E93/…innenstadtplan.pdf
Locate the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke (Brücke = bridge).
South of it you can see the Brückentor (bridge gate) and a bit further south the Brücken-pl. (Brückenplatz - bridge place).
Stuttgart
Your hotel is opposite the Porsche Arena (building in red on the below map).

The Stadtbahn (tram - U logo) runs only for events at one of the arenas there. The S-Bahn station (S logo) is always served.

thank you so much for the detailed reply, we will check the schedule accordingly.
As for the hotel, we might consider switch to Le Meriden, not much informaiton about that hotel in Stuttgart Forums (only mentioned once by Markpolko), hope it%26#39;s in a good location. We are trying to stay with US chain hotels we have membership to take advantage of the point accumulation. Is there a Holiday Inn?

Le Meridien is in a good and really central location.

Le Meridien is opposite the planetarium.

Next to the tram stop Staatsgalerie. From Hauptbahnhof (main train station) it makes however no sense to use the tram for one stop. Just exit the station building through the southern exit and walk accross the part to your hotel. Or with lot%26#39;s of luggage use a taxi.
The Hilton is the perfect place for
- the Mercedes Benz Museum
- the Untertürkheim plant of Mercedes
- the various sport and event arenas there
- the fest ground Cannstatter Wasen (albeit at the 4 weeks this one is used during the year it may be even too close for the taste of many).

Le Meridien always gets good hotel reviews, is in central Stuttgart, across the palace gardens from the train station. Just take the U9 or U14 from the train station one stop to the Staatsgallerie station. The Staatsgallerie U-bahn stop is also served by another 3 lines to access many places in Stuttgart. You can also easily walk to any place in central Stuttgart. The Holiday Inn isn%26#39;t in central Stuttgart but in Weilimdorf close to the S-6 station on the west side of town.
Of these hotels, I personally would prefer Le Meridien especially as it is well located, and has good access to U-bahns lines to visit all the major attractions in Stuttgart quickly. One stop away are the two major U-bahn stations, Charlottenplatz and Hauptbahnhof for making transfers if necessary.
S-bahns usually run every half hour, and twice as frequently during rush hours. Most of the day, U-bahns run every 10 minutes, and less frequently during early or late hours on weekends. Thereby, when going into central Stuttgart from the Meridien, about every 2 minutes should be an acceptable U-bahn train to take you one stop closer to the center of Stuttgart (you can use a Kurz ticket for this, which is good for up to 3 stops on the U-bahn or buses for 1€). If you stay in the other hotels, frequency of the S-bahns will be only every 15-30 minutes because the closest S-bahn stations only lie on one line.
