I%26#39;m visiting Germany for the very first time in June. We are going to be in Cologne for about 4 days and then I want to travel to Salzburg, Austria. I don%26#39;t want to fly there because I%26#39;d like to see %26quot;Germany%26quot; as I%26#39;m going there. I would be interested in traveling by train, bus, boat etc. I also don%26#39;t want to rent a car because I will be concentrating on my driving and not on the sites.
Does anyone know if there is a way to sail down to Salzburg?

No. The river Salzach in Salzburg is not really navigable.
Also a question how much time do you have.
Cologne to Passau (at the German/Austrian border) needs by boat 9-12 days.
A must is for sure the Middle Rhine Valley south of Cologne, between Koblenz and Mainz. It%26#39;s on a direct train route and you have also the option to make a part by boat.

Take a train or rent a car. The car will actually allow you to see more. How much time do you have? There is so much between Cologne and Salzburg, I would map it out and take a train w/stops on the way or rent a car and make the stops.
People concentrate when they are driving?

Thank you so much for the responses. I am only going to be on my whole trip for a week. I%26#39;m traveling to Austria all by myself and am only going to be there for 3 days. I just wanted to see Salzburg and since nobody wanted to take that side trip, I decided to go by myself and am looking for the easiest, safest way to go. I%26#39;m going to look into your idea! thank you.

Easiest way to go is by train. Take a look at the die bahn site. You will have about a 6-7 hour trip from Koln to Salzburg.
