The Cannstatter Volksfest ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ) is the world%26#39;s second largest beer festival and the world%26#39;s largest fun festival with lots of rides, many of which are more typical of a large amusement park. It is in Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) from 25Sept to 11Oct.

All would certainly enjoy both the excellent Mercedes Benz and Porsche Museums. There are also a few other automobile-related sights such as the recreated workshop of Daimler where the first automobile was built, and his birth house in Schorndorf which now hosts a museum about him and has the world%26#39;s first motorcycle.

Stuttgart is the largest city in Germany with vineyards, and they are extensive, making it a rarity like Lyon, France, with extensive vineyards within a large city. So besides the beer festival, you can imbibe wine from the many Weinstube%26#39;s and Besenwirthschaft%26#39;s. The tourist office offers nice free brochure on suggested walks through the vineyards with nice views and many wineries, Weinstube%26#39;s and Besenwirtschaft%26#39;s along the way ( www.stuttgarter-weinwanderweg.de ).

Stuttgart also has good nightlife, but I%26#39;m too old to participate in it.

Stuttgart also hosts the world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival, Fruehlingsfest ( www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de only in German) which is from mid-April to early May (this year 3May).

I believe beer at the festival is between 8-9€ a Mass (liter), the price is probably mentioned somewhere on the website. In other places a half liter will probably be 3-3.50€.

Unlike in Munich, most hotels don%26#39;t jack up the price tremendously during this time, except for a very few exceptions near the fairgrounds. I would recommend staying near the center of Stuttgart and using the excellent frequent public transportation to go to the festival, there is a special U-bahn that goes right to the center of it every 10 minutes, and several others that go to the edges, and also S-bahns near the edge. Among other ways, hotels in Stuttgart are bookable through the tourist office website above. Some possible hotels fitting your criteria are the Le Meriden Stuttgart, Unger, Royal, Kronen-Hotel, Maritim Hotel, and Best Western Ketterer.

Its a great choice I%26#39;ve been twice, only the Munich October Fest is bigger.
