Hi! My partner and i will be in munich for a few days in October. We are planning to hire a car and visit Neuschwanstein and Linderhof over two days.
Any suggestions on what route to take?
Which castle should we head to first?
And any suggestions on a pretty place to stay overnight??

First, for a place to stay overnight, I recommend the Villa Jaegerhaus in Hohenschwangau with close-up views of lit-up by night Neuschwanstein Palace from your room. It%26#39;s an excellent small hotel, and although all rooms have palace views, some only of nextdoor Hohenschwangau Palace, so specify a Neuschwanstein view, preferably from an upper story. For my review, click on my name, and another reviewer has also taken some nice pictures. You may get a discount by arranging tickets to the palaces through them. The restaurant in the associated hotel across the road is also excellent.
If you stay there, I would drive from Munich using the A95 autobahn going toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At Oberau, take Hwy 23 toward Oberammergau (you might as well visit it for a short time) and then return the way you came, and at Ettal visit the monastery church and then take the road to Linderhof. You can then visit the palace. Continue on then to Reutte, and then to Fuessen and Hohenschwangau. If you have time, you could then visit the palaces there, but also could do it first thing in the morning. Besides Neuschwanstein, you can also visit Hohenschwangau Palace where the family actually lived.
Afterwards, I would return by the same route, but at Reutte continue on Hwy179 to Ehrwald, where if it is a nice day you could take the cable car up the Zugspitze, Germany%26#39;s highest mountain. Then take Hwy187 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, look around there, or possibly then take Hwy2 to Mittenwald. This way you would get more of the Alps.

Agree with prior post on Villa Jagerhaus. I usually request a corner room (#62) which will have a view of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Link to Jagerhaus:

The only thing I would add is to make sure you drive the 10-15 minutes from Oberammergau to the Wieskirche. Continue north on the B23, turn left on 2059 and then left on 2559 to Wies. Worth the detour and you can get to Fuessen going this way instead of through Reutte. Go this way to Fuessen and through Reutte to Garmisch..

I suggest if you are leaving from Munich that you take the country roads and head towards one of the likes (ammersee, starnbergersee etc) as a place to stop for lunch maybe... then on to your destination... but stay off the motorways unless youre in a hurry... if youre lucky you will still get the autumn colours... unfortunatley too late to swim in the lakes unloess youre a member of the polar bear club... i suggest you ignore TA reviewed hotels for small town Bavaria and hunt down a local country B+B (they are called %26#39;Pension%26#39; in German)... in the Schwangau area there are soo many of these and it would be a shame to hang out with foreigners rather than locals. Many farm stays etc too. So type in the name of any small town on your map and also the word %26#39;pension%26#39; or %26#39;bed n breakfast%26#39;... the area around the castles and fuessen is very nice and since you have a car there will be plenty of options for you...
