We are travelling from brussels to gdansk in summer to join a wedding. By that time, we will have a baby of 6 months, so we don%26#39;t want to drive to many hours a day. We were thinking of staying some days in berlin. About 3 days... Are there other cities worth visiting? Dusseldorf? Hannover?
I am still doubting if going by car is such a good idea, but since we have a lot of luggage, I don%26#39;t think that taking a plane is an option...

Go to the German Rail website www.bahn.de and you can punch in the details for each trip. There is an English language option.
For each trip you%26#39;ll get the details as to whether changes are necessary and total trip time. You can even print out the details.

A long shot I guess, as its just opened but can anyone give any reports on the new Motel One which opened in Leipzig last month - located opposite Nikolaikirche. Either anyone who%26#39;s been there or local knowledge from anyone living in Leipzig area.
I%26#39;ve booked a room to stay there later this month (over the Pfingsten weekend) but still have another hotel booking, just in case!
I know that Motel One%26#39;s tend to have pretty tiny rooms but the location looked too tempting to pass up on, combined with the fact that the price is half that of my other hotel option!
Need to make a decision pretty soon on which hotel to cancel - the other option being the Hotel Adagio, which looks lovely but not as central and quite pricey for me now that the £ has gone so low.

I%26#39;m traveling around Germany in June with some friends in a campervan and one of our destinations is Hannover.
We%26#39;re looking for somewhere where we can park up and spend the night as close to the attractions of the centre as possible, preferably with toilet/shower facilities too.
I%26#39;ve looked at camp sites but I%26#39;m struggling to find one close enough to centre.
Any ideas?

I have been to hannover many times and don%26#39;t think there is anywhere in the centre, but done some research for you and found a place which says it is 15 mins by car from the centre.
Type in www.camping-hannover.de/en/camping and have a look at the website.

there is a camp-sites, specialzed in motorhomes in Berlin-Tegel, northwestern part of town, directly on motorway to Hamburg, but still inside the city, with connection to subway and bus.

Based on Trip Advisor reviews we have made a resservation at Motel One Alexanderplatz. Can anyone tell us of a good restaurant where we could get Weiner Schnitzel? Also can anyone who has stayed at the hotel advise us on the best room location. We have no problem handling noise but like to have something to look at from the room window - not the AC unit or the garbage!

If you%26#39;ve no problem with traffic noise, try to get a room to the front of the hotel, with a view of the TV tower. Personally, I had no problem with noise here anyway, even though my room was facing the main road and railway line.
For Schnitzel, there may be other specialist restaurants that someone else may know of, however I recommend my favourite cafe bar in Berlin, Cafe Courage http://www.cafecourage.de/ (websitein German only!) which is located on the Schoenhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg. Its a fairly pleasant walk to here from the Motel One or a couple of stops on the U-bahn. I found this cafe by chance on my first visit to Berlin and not had a better Schnitzel elsewhere in the city since!

I was thinking of staying in Rothenberg for three days, and traveling to the other towns on the Romantic Road on day trips. Is that a good plan?
Will I need a car to do this, or will trains or buses be available? Thanks.

We only visited Rothenberg as a day trip from Nuremberg, but I wish we had stayed at least one night. It is a neat town and it would have been nice to have had the chance to wander the streets in the mornings and evenings when there weren%26#39;t as many people.
The train doesn%26#39;t run along the Romantic Road and Rothenberg is actually at the end of a spur line, so it isn%26#39;t a particularly convinient base if you are using the train. I am not sure about buses.
When we visited the towns on the Romantic Road, we went by car, which was really easy to do.

As novembermoon said, Rothenburg is not convenient as a base if using trains. You would always have to take the train from Rothenburg to Steinach, and even then, I am doubtful that would be far enough to get onto the main train lines. A car would be MUCH better.
And, yes, Rothenburg after the hordes have gone is a whole different experience. We stayed three nights in 2006 and very much enjoyed it. We stayed at Pension Elke and had a great time.

If you like Rothenburg, then also visit Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen - both walled cities and walkable like Rothenburg. Nördlingen also has a historic railroad museum (next to the train station). They sometimes run excursion trains. We also loved Würzburg. Be sure to go up to the fortress over looking the city.

C. Chinescher Turm (Chinese tower) @ Englischer Garten - perfect on a nice day.
D. At lunch time, I always recommend hanging at the Viktualienmarkt for a Mas of bier and a sandwich.
Need to get to Leipzig in august from the UK ( Manchester) and wondering what would be the cheapest and most effective way to get there. Travelling with 2 teenagers so need some help please :). So far only found air flights in excess of £250 each and 6 hours there and 6 hours back !!
Should i go via Berlin ? or other location ?
How much does it cost by train from Berlin to Leipzig ?

There are no direct flights to Leipzig from UK.
You can fly to Berlin and get the train without too much hassle.
Other option is Ryanair Stanstead to Altenburg which is 50k from Leipzig.
I suggest Berlin and hire a car. It is only 2 hours and motorway all the way.

Getting the train from Berlin to Leipzig is pretty easy - and complete luxury compared to British Rail! :-) Its just over an hour journey time on the ICE trains and they run regularly from Berlin Hauptbahnhof
Fares can be reasonably cheap if you book them in advance on their website www.bahn.de - as an example at the moment is the %26quot;Germany Special%26quot; fare for 29E each way, bookable from 89 days in advance of your trip. Only downside of course the special offer fares is that you can%26#39;t change them once booked, so you need to allow enough time in case of any flight delays.

Driving is simple. The motorway is 200m from the airport and a simple ,well marked ,route.
Rail is great but with 3 people may be quite costly.

I looked up the official website bahn.de, enter June dates, and got the fares as 29E to 61E each leg, for 2nd class. So your return fare should be 58E ($78) to 122E, without any discount.

Please note that the discounted tickets (Dauer-Spezial for EUR 29 or 39) are only good for the connection they are bought for. No change. No refund. A problem if your plane is late. Less a problem for the return trip.
Normal tickets are flexible and you can use any train to Freiburg inside the validity of the ticket (2 days).
You can buy ticket at max. 89 days in advance.
Probably the best option is to check if you can get a Rail%26amp;Fly ticket from your airline.
Have anybody used Sixt holiday cars for rental outside Europe (for example: Canada) and can give first hand impression about their service / problems (if any)? Unfortunately people in the Canada forum don%26#39;t seem to know them, as they are a European based company...

I rent quite often a car with holidaycars.com in Canada and also USA. Both for business trips and leisure with the family. I usually choose the cheapest supplier on their site, so not always the same because the rates seem to change depending on the time of the year you are travelling (I suppose it has to do with vacantion periods or something).
In any case I%26#39;ve always been satisfied with the prices, service and the car I get. Make sure you do not mistake %26#39;Sixt holiday cars%26#39; with %26#39;holidaycars.com%26#39; ; they are 2 different companies. What I like is how holidaycars.com compares different car rental companies and you choose the one you want (either by name or because of the price). What I find the easiest is that they apply all-in rates, so none of that hassle when you pick-up your car aboutinsurrances and stuff. This is something you can%26#39;t do with Sixt. Anyway, in short, yes I was very satisfied with holidaycars.com each and everytime. Hope that helps and have a nice trip !

I have a 12 day Germany trip planned from 22nd May to 2 June. I would be travelling with my wife and my 11 yr old son.
With the H1N1 flu spreading the way it is, (and 8 reported cases in Germany), I was wondering what the situation was really like on the ground.
Are people actually walking around with facemasks or there is panic.
Should we think about cancelling the tour?? We dont have much time for cancelling if we are to get a refund on the tour.

First of all, there is a swine flu sticky at the top of the forum with advice and updates, though I havent even bothered to look at it myself since I am not that concerned. Second, this flu isn%26#39;t any more deadly than any of the other flus that people get and die from every day all over the world. Thirdly, wearing a face mask does absolutely nothing, unless you are in surgery and do not want your germs to get into an open wound, they do not work the other way around, unless you have on a full, sealed sort of mask. Have not seen anyone with that sort of thing on.
If you want to see for your self if there is panic or if people are wearing masks, there are plenty of web cams in all the touristy places. Downtown Frankfurt has been packed the past weekend, so I don%26#39;t think any one is panicking and frankly, I don%26#39;t think anyone cares very much. It is a news media frenzy and that is all. I certainly would not cancel my trip.

No one in Germany, except surgeons on duty and a few others whose profession requires it, wears a facemask. No one. You won%26#39;t see any in the streets.
There is no panic in Germany. Not even in the mass media. As the situation is right now, there is absolutely no reason to cancel your trip.
Nine cases among a population of 82 million. All of them are getting better, the first have already been released from hospital. Medical treatment works.
I%26#39;d recommend having travel health insurance, but I%26#39;d recommend that for any intercontinental trip anyway.

The only problem I can see with such an epidemic is with India, and if they impose travel restrictions. A few years ago, we couldn%26#39;t return to our home in the country we were living in if a case of the disease (I believe bird flu) had been reported in the countries we had traveled to while we were there, and had to be in a country that had no cases (disease free) for over a month to return. But it looks like the swine flu epidemic isn%26#39;t really amounting to anything so I doubt that severe travel restrictions would be applied.

There%26#39;s food all over the place at small restaurants and cafés, stand-alone and chain restaurants in any possible ethnic flavour you can think of (including, occasionally, German). Especially along Simon-Dach-Strasse, Grünberger Strasse, Boxhagener Str., but really just about any street that isn%26#39;t purely residential or industrial. No need to go to any other district. And, cross the bridge over the Spree and you%26#39;re in Kreuzberg which is also full of etaing and drinking establishments.
