Munich w/day trips or stay outside town?

My daughter and I will be flying into Munich on July 10th. We are going directly to Salzburg via train that day and will spend 3 nights.

We fly out of Munich on July 16th. I am trying to decide how to spend the 13th, 14th and 15th. We are considering visiting Fussen or Garmisch or Regensburg via train.

I%26#39;m wondering if we would be better off staying in Munich and taking day trips or choosing our destinations and staying overnight at them.

Does anyone have suggestions?

I%26#39;d stay in Munich and take daytrips out. If you change your hotel, you%26#39;ll lose most of a morning.

All of the places you%26#39;ve mentioned, except Salzburg, have chapters in Earl Steinbicker%26#39;s %26quot;Daytrips Germany%26quot;. It is published by Hastings House and they have a website where you can see a sample of the daytrips. I%26#39;ve used his guides for Europe and the US and he has never let me down.

From Salzburg, Berchtesgaden is an easy daytrip and also has a chapter in Steinbicker%26#39;s guide.

stay in Munich. Then let the weather make your mind up for you. Munich is a hub from which these others can easily be reached. The others are more %26quot;end of the line%26quot;, so you%26#39;d probably need to get back to Munich and travel out again if you want to visit another.

Munich is a great base for daytrips. We stay near the main station at either Sofitel or Meridien.

I%26#39;d stay in Garmisch. Lots to see in the area, close enough to take the bus to Linderhof, Fuessen, Ettal, Oberammergau, Zugspitz, etc.. And you are in a nice little village instead of the big city.

Maybe 2 days in Garmisch and last day back in Munich so that your are ready for the next day flight.

We stayed in Munich for 5 days and toook day trips to Rothenberg, Neuschwanstein, Mittenwald, Oberammergau, Innsbruck, Fussen and Salzburg. It works as a very centralized hub for day trips. we used a rental car, but there are also trains to these locations.

I would suggest near the historic centre (which is quite close to the main station anyway) and avoid the boring chain hotels near the station unless you want bland and safe. Enjoy Munich and dont try and cram in too much. You can do the disney castle etc in a day trip but then you miss out on the cool area around it. Why not stay a night in Schwangau at a proper Bavarian B%26amp;B and relax and enjoy the area, rent a bike and see Fuessen, Hohenschwangau, the lakes, disney castle etc etc... A day trip to see the castle then come straight back, in my opinion as a Bavarian, is a waste. In summer you can swim in the lakes. Its beautiful.
