brussels-gdansk via berlin

Hello,

We are travelling from brussels to gdansk in summer to join a wedding. By that time, we will have a baby of 6 months, so we don%26#39;t want to drive to many hours a day. We were thinking of staying some days in berlin. About 3 days... Are there other cities worth visiting? Dusseldorf? Hannover?

I am still doubting if going by car is such a good idea, but since we have a lot of luggage, I don%26#39;t think that taking a plane is an option...

Travelling times by train??

Hi!

I%26#39;m just trying to get a rough indication of travelling times so I can plan my itinerary. If anyone knows the type of train/transport, or whether I%26#39;ll have to change trains, that would be great!! There%26#39;s quite a few, sorry :(

Times from:

*Hamburg to Berlin

*Hamburg to Lueneburg

*Berlin to Goettingen

*Berlin to Harz Mountains

*Goettingen to Harz Mountains (including Brocken, Wernigerode, Quedlinburg and how to get to/from each of these places)

*Goettingen to Dresden

*Dresden to Nuernberg

*Dresden to Frankfurt

*Frankfurt to to Munich

*Nuernberg to Munich

*Nuernberg to Stuttgart

*Stuttgart to Munich

Whoa! That%26#39;s a lot. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated. thanks so much :)

Go to the German Rail website www.bahn.de and you can punch in the details for each trip. There is an English language option.

For each trip you%26#39;ll get the details as to whether changes are necessary and total trip time. You can even print out the details.

new Motel One in Leipzig

A long shot I guess, as its just opened but can anyone give any reports on the new Motel One which opened in Leipzig last month - located opposite Nikolaikirche. Either anyone who%26#39;s been there or local knowledge from anyone living in Leipzig area.

I%26#39;ve booked a room to stay there later this month (over the Pfingsten weekend) but still have another hotel booking, just in case!

I know that Motel One%26#39;s tend to have pretty tiny rooms but the location looked too tempting to pass up on, combined with the fact that the price is half that of my other hotel option!

Need to make a decision pretty soon on which hotel to cancel - the other option being the Hotel Adagio, which looks lovely but not as central and quite pricey for me now that the £ has gone so low.

City centre motorhome parking?

Hey,

I%26#39;m traveling around Germany in June with some friends in a campervan and one of our destinations is Hannover.

We%26#39;re looking for somewhere where we can park up and spend the night as close to the attractions of the centre as possible, preferably with toilet/shower facilities too.

I%26#39;ve looked at camp sites but I%26#39;m struggling to find one close enough to centre.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rob

I have been to hannover many times and don%26#39;t think there is anywhere in the centre, but done some research for you and found a place which says it is 15 mins by car from the centre.

Type in www.camping-hannover.de/en/camping and have a look at the website.

Hope you have a lovely time.

Alexanderplatz Motel One/Restaurants

Based on Trip Advisor reviews we have made a resservation at Motel One Alexanderplatz. Can anyone tell us of a good restaurant where we could get Weiner Schnitzel? Also can anyone who has stayed at the hotel advise us on the best room location. We have no problem handling noise but like to have something to look at from the room window - not the AC unit or the garbage!

If you%26#39;ve no problem with traffic noise, try to get a room to the front of the hotel, with a view of the TV tower. Personally, I had no problem with noise here anyway, even though my room was facing the main road and railway line.

For Schnitzel, there may be other specialist restaurants that someone else may know of, however I recommend my favourite cafe bar in Berlin, Cafe Courage http://www.cafecourage.de/ (websitein German only!) which is located on the Schoenhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg. Its a fairly pleasant walk to here from the Motel One or a couple of stops on the U-bahn. I found this cafe by chance on my first visit to Berlin and not had a better Schnitzel elsewhere in the city since!

Stay in Rothenberg?

I was thinking of staying in Rothenberg for three days, and traveling to the other towns on the Romantic Road on day trips. Is that a good plan?

Will I need a car to do this, or will trains or buses be available? Thanks.

We only visited Rothenberg as a day trip from Nuremberg, but I wish we had stayed at least one night. It is a neat town and it would have been nice to have had the chance to wander the streets in the mornings and evenings when there weren%26#39;t as many people.

The train doesn%26#39;t run along the Romantic Road and Rothenberg is actually at the end of a spur line, so it isn%26#39;t a particularly convinient base if you are using the train. I am not sure about buses.

When we visited the towns on the Romantic Road, we went by car, which was really easy to do.

As novembermoon said, Rothenburg is not convenient as a base if using trains. You would always have to take the train from Rothenburg to Steinach, and even then, I am doubtful that would be far enough to get onto the main train lines. A car would be MUCH better.

And, yes, Rothenburg after the hordes have gone is a whole different experience. We stayed three nights in 2006 and very much enjoyed it. We stayed at Pension Elke and had a great time.

If you like Rothenburg, then also visit Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen - both walled cities and walkable like Rothenburg. Nördlingen also has a historic railroad museum (next to the train station). They sometimes run excursion trains. We also loved Würzburg. Be sure to go up to the fortress over looking the city.

If you look here

D. At lunch time, I always recommend hanging at the Viktualienmarkt for a Mas of bier and a sandwich.

Trip to Leipzig

Hi,

Need to get to Leipzig in august from the UK ( Manchester) and wondering what would be the cheapest and most effective way to get there. Travelling with 2 teenagers so need some help please :). So far only found air flights in excess of £250 each and 6 hours there and 6 hours back !!

Should i go via Berlin ? or other location ?

How much does it cost by train from Berlin to Leipzig ?

Thanks,

Helen

|||

There are no direct flights to Leipzig from UK.

You can fly to Berlin and get the train without too much hassle.

Other option is Ryanair Stanstead to Altenburg which is 50k from Leipzig.

I suggest Berlin and hire a car. It is only 2 hours and motorway all the way.

|||

That sounds a good idea - if i dare hit the roads !

Will investigate the flight to Berlin and then train as I%26#39;m sure they have a good rail system over there ( compared to Britishrail !)

Thanks,

Helen

|||

Getting the train from Berlin to Leipzig is pretty easy - and complete luxury compared to British Rail! :-) Its just over an hour journey time on the ICE trains and they run regularly from Berlin Hauptbahnhof

Fares can be reasonably cheap if you book them in advance on their website www.bahn.de - as an example at the moment is the %26quot;Germany Special%26quot; fare for 29E each way, bookable from 89 days in advance of your trip. Only downside of course the special offer fares is that you can%26#39;t change them once booked, so you need to allow enough time in case of any flight delays.

|||

Driving is simple. The motorway is 200m from the airport and a simple ,well marked ,route.

Rail is great but with 3 people may be quite costly.

Either way have a great trip.

germany travel

want to travel in germany and will be there in germany for around 15 days.what should b the best option to travel(cheapest) and fast.what rail pass will be best option for me.i dont have a fixed itenary yet

|||

Maybe a 6 days or so German Rail Pass.

bahn.de/international/…german_rail_pass.shtml

You dunno want to travel every day.

%26gt; i dont have a fixed itenary yet

In this case you have anyway only two options:

- rail pass (you don%26#39;t have to reserve for German trains, you can just hop on and off with your rail pass)

- rental car

|||

thanks for your guidance,but could u eloborate about it.also can u help with the itenary

About traveling in Germany 1 st time

I would like to ask you.What train I have to use from Frankfurt Airport to Freiburg im Breisgau?

Probably I need local train, because I get information about train 2 class on the WEB, it will be $305 around trip for 2 hours, more than my ticket from USA to Germany.

Sincerely Emily

|||

I looked up the official website bahn.de, enter June dates, and got the fares as 29E to 61E each leg, for 2nd class. So your return fare should be 58E ($78) to 122E, without any discount.

Pick your trains from this same website.

|||

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e

Start: FRA

Dest.: FR

bahn.de/international/…sparpreis.shtml

bahn.de/international/…onlineticket.shtml

If you wish to use an online ticket, make sure to carry the booking confirmation and exactly the same payment card you used to make the booking with you.

|||

Please note that the discounted tickets (Dauer-Spezial for EUR 29 or 39) are only good for the connection they are bought for. No change. No refund. A problem if your plane is late. Less a problem for the return trip.

Normal tickets are flexible and you can use any train to Freiburg inside the validity of the ticket (2 days).

You can buy ticket at max. 89 days in advance.

Probably the best option is to check if you can get a Rail%26amp;Fly ticket from your airline.

Sixt Holiday cars

Hi all,

Have anybody used Sixt holiday cars for rental outside Europe (for example: Canada) and can give first hand impression about their service / problems (if any)? Unfortunately people in the Canada forum don%26#39;t seem to know them, as they are a European based company...

Thanks,

Elad.

|||

Elad,

I rent quite often a car with holidaycars.com in Canada and also USA. Both for business trips and leisure with the family. I usually choose the cheapest supplier on their site, so not always the same because the rates seem to change depending on the time of the year you are travelling (I suppose it has to do with vacantion periods or something).

In any case I%26#39;ve always been satisfied with the prices, service and the car I get. Make sure you do not mistake %26#39;Sixt holiday cars%26#39; with %26#39;holidaycars.com%26#39; ; they are 2 different companies. What I like is how holidaycars.com compares different car rental companies and you choose the one you want (either by name or because of the price). What I find the easiest is that they apply all-in rates, so none of that hassle when you pick-up your car aboutinsurrances and stuff. This is something you can%26#39;t do with Sixt. Anyway, in short, yes I was very satisfied with holidaycars.com each and everytime. Hope that helps and have a nice trip !

Swine Flue scare

I have a 12 day Germany trip planned from 22nd May to 2 June. I would be travelling with my wife and my 11 yr old son.

With the H1N1 flu spreading the way it is, (and 8 reported cases in Germany), I was wondering what the situation was really like on the ground.

Are people actually walking around with facemasks or there is panic.

Should we think about cancelling the tour?? We dont have much time for cancelling if we are to get a refund on the tour.

Thanks in advance.

|||

First of all, there is a swine flu sticky at the top of the forum with advice and updates, though I havent even bothered to look at it myself since I am not that concerned. Second, this flu isn%26#39;t any more deadly than any of the other flus that people get and die from every day all over the world. Thirdly, wearing a face mask does absolutely nothing, unless you are in surgery and do not want your germs to get into an open wound, they do not work the other way around, unless you have on a full, sealed sort of mask. Have not seen anyone with that sort of thing on.

If you want to see for your self if there is panic or if people are wearing masks, there are plenty of web cams in all the touristy places. Downtown Frankfurt has been packed the past weekend, so I don%26#39;t think any one is panicking and frankly, I don%26#39;t think anyone cares very much. It is a news media frenzy and that is all. I certainly would not cancel my trip.

|||

dear rrdgoa,

all the reported cases of swine flu in germany have been turned out to be very mild, no life has been threatened till now. also, while walking around in frankfurt - the city with the major german airport - i have not seen a single person wearing facemasks. right now, it looks like the disease is not hitting central europe as hard as it did in mexico.

|||

No one in Germany, except surgeons on duty and a few others whose profession requires it, wears a facemask. No one. You won%26#39;t see any in the streets.

There is no panic in Germany. Not even in the mass media. As the situation is right now, there is absolutely no reason to cancel your trip.

Nine cases among a population of 82 million. All of them are getting better, the first have already been released from hospital. Medical treatment works.

I%26#39;d recommend having travel health insurance, but I%26#39;d recommend that for any intercontinental trip anyway.

|||

Thanks for all the replies.

That was most reassuring. We are planning to be in Germany end-May and hope we have a rocking time.

|||

I%26#39;m sure you will! Have a great trip.

|||

The only problem I can see with such an epidemic is with India, and if they impose travel restrictions. A few years ago, we couldn%26#39;t return to our home in the country we were living in if a case of the disease (I believe bird flu) had been reported in the countries we had traveled to while we were there, and had to be in a country that had no cases (disease free) for over a month to return. But it looks like the swine flu epidemic isn%26#39;t really amounting to anything so I doubt that severe travel restrictions would be applied.

Pub food in friedrichshain

hi i will be staying in friedrichshain for a few nights and would like to know of any bars in the area that serve food. i know that it i quite close to mitte so i always have the option to go there. not looking for anything overpriced but just good food at average prices. also how is the nightlife in that area on a week night. im going to be in berlin on a monday to thursday

|||

There%26#39;s food all over the place at small restaurants and cafés, stand-alone and chain restaurants in any possible ethnic flavour you can think of (including, occasionally, German). Especially along Simon-Dach-Strasse, Grünberger Strasse, Boxhagener Str., but really just about any street that isn%26#39;t purely residential or industrial. No need to go to any other district. And, cross the bridge over the Spree and you%26#39;re in Kreuzberg which is also full of etaing and drinking establishments.

Renting a car at Munich Airport

I have been told by Thrifty Car Rental that they will take a 2,200 Euro deposit on my Visa card. Is this the policy for all of the car rental companies at the Munich airport?

|||

No, never happened to me anyway.

I usually rent from Europcar or Avis, no deposit required. There%26#39;s also Herzt and Sixt operating at the airport premises.

Check where Thrifty operates.

I would avoid Thrifty anyway, see tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187337-i301-k2464…

|||

I would suggest you try Gemut.com. They operate out of Oregon but are a broker for more than one company. The rental price is guaranteed in dollars and if the exchange rate changes to your favor, you can cancel the rental and re-do it at a lower rate.

Last year our car was through Avis and there was no deposit. This year it is with Europcar and, again, no deposit. Personally, I would not use Thrifty.

|||

That a rental car company is really withdrawing the deposit from your card and return it afterwards (if at all) is not common.

But the rental companies take your credit card as a deposit. That%26#39;s normal. You can see this

a) if you try to rent a car without having a credit card.

Than you will really have to pay a deposit in cash.

b) if you try to rent a really expensive car you have to present 2 credit cards

Thus they have the double deposit.

If something goes wrong the rental car company will take the deposit sum just from your credit card. That%26#39;s exactly for what a deposit is for. If the rental car company has higher claims against you they have to use normal legal proceedings against you for the rest of the sum (in case you won%26#39;t just pay).

|||

UVARIDER - do you mean that Thrifty will place a HOLD for that amount? In that case, you are not really paying it, it%26#39;s that Thrifty has reserved this amount and, thus, your available credit on the credit card (how much you can still use) is reduced by the hold amount.

|||

yes, its just a hold. However, my credit limit is 10,000, and I need credit available to rent motorcycles (which have a damage deposit which I understand) later in the trip. I will try one of the other options

|||

By the way, UVA, you DO know that picking the car up at the airport will cost you about 20% more, right?

|||

The question is if the other rental car companies will not do exactly the same.

At least in their fine prints you can read that they *can* do this. Albeit the amount is normally less than 2,200 Euro. Will depend however on the car class and other things.

|||

Be aware that Thrifty is not located at the airport. They are about 1 mile away. We did not know this at the time. When we arrived at the Munich Airport and looked for the Thrifty counter and could not find it. I went to one of the rental car desks and they offered to call Thrifty for me and told me where I would be picked up. The wait was about 10 minutes. We had no problem with them, but I wish I had known at the time that they do not have a counter at the airport. This was 2 years ago, so maybe things have changed...

|||

I agree with apecs999 about gemut and for the reasons stated. Also,great rates and customer service.

Deciding between some tours

Hi There,

Heading to Berlin next week (yay!!!) and trying to work out some things to do while I%26#39;m there.

I%26#39;m trying to decide between taking an Insider Walking tour and the Fat Tire bike tour. They both look great and are ranked so close on here that I can%26#39;t for the life of me decide.

I%26#39;m assuming one would see more of Berlin on the bike tour? The Insider tour leaves from a point right near my hotel by the zoo making it incredibly convenient.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Decisions, decisions :)

C

|||

I think it has been answered just this week: at the bike tour, you cover more area and have fun (if you like biking), but at the walking tour you learn more.

|||

the insidertour walk is amazing! I would highly recommend it! I don%26#39;t think there is another possible way of fitting in all the main tourist attractions in berlin in one day if you don%26#39;t know the city. The guides are excellent, we had Derek, and he really knew his stuff. His stories and anecdotes really made the tour special. We learned stuff about Berlin we%26#39;d never have known otherwise! You should so do it!

|||

Awesome thanks for the heads up. I guess everything I%26#39;ve read about the Insider tours is right, it%26#39;s just an added bonus that they head out from right near my hotel!

8 hours and counting till I board the plane!!! :)

Honeymoon in Bavaria

Hello.

My girlfriend and I (early thirties) get married at the end of September. We%26#39;re looking for somewhere interesting to go on honeymoon and Bavaria is an option. Can anyone recommend a nice hotel for under £100 a night? And could anyone advise on good restaurants and things to do when we%26#39;re over there?

Thanks very much in advance.

|||

I%26#39;ll stick my neck out and recommend Hotel Spitzweg in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

And in that town, restaurants abound; also in adjacent ones along the Romantic Road, down to the Alps.

If you prefer mountains, go down to Mittenwald, but weather is possibly not so good at that time of year.

|||

If I were to get married (again), I would go to Fuessen and stay at the Villa Jagerhaus. Don%26#39;t know what the rates are in September, but from the corner rooms (#42) you would have a view of both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles. Link below:

www.hohenschwangau.de/jaegerhaus0.0.html

You can get over to Munich, Garmisch, Wieskirche, Ettal and into Innsbruck from here pretty easy.

Room prices at the Jagerhaus are on the website and might be a bit more, but it is worth every penny if you want to impress!

|||

I agree with bwelsted on staying at the Villa Jaegerhaus, you%26#39;d have a hard time finding a place more romantic than that. Although all rooms have a palace view, some are only of nextdoor Hohenschwangau Palace and not Neuschwanstein, so specify that Neuschwanstein view. For my review, click on my name. Another reviewer has taken some nice photos. We like it so much, we%26#39;re planning to go back again this year, and the restaurant across the street in the associated Hotel Lisl is excellent. If the musical is still on, although expensive, it is excellent. The nearby town of Fuessen is pleasant and has things to see, there is a summer bobsled run, and the opportunity for hikes into the Alps.

Another romantic place is Salzburg, Austria (barely across the border from Bavaria), just make sure to stay in the old town for its lovely ambience. Besides the very pleasant city and its attractions, it literally sits on the doorstep of the German and Austrian Alps for some magnificent scenery. (Of course, Neuschwanstein is also on the edge of the Alps and even closer to them, the mountains are right there.) There%26#39;s plenty of interesting things to do in and around Salzburg to last you weeks, including a visit to the underground salt mine, a visit to the ice caves at Werfen (to me a must, nice castle also), a boat trip on the Koenigssee for some of Germany%26#39;s best scenery, a visit to the bishop%26#39;s water garden where he liked to play tricks on his guests with water, and perhaps a Sound of Music tour if that interests you. And for dessert, split a Salzberger Nockerl.

|||

A very nice hotel in Munich:

Really cool rooms! Good connection to the city by train or subway.

Danube Bike Trail

I%26#39;ve spent the last 3 summers trying to convince friends to join me on a backpacking trip somewhere around Europe and I%26#39;ve finally given up on them doing it so I%26#39;m gonna go alone. Probably not the best year considering how weak Sterling is against the Euro so I%26#39;ve decided to head for Eastern Europe were they don%26#39;t use the cursed Euro yet! I%26#39;m gonna start in Passau Germany and cycle along the Danube until I reach Vienna or possibly Bratislava haven%26#39;t decided yet and it%26#39;s only 40miles of difference after that I%26#39;m gonna bus or train it to Budapest or wherever else tickles my fancy, just not sure about things like fares. Is it better to get an Interrail pass or should I do it on my own? I%26#39;m sceptical of the fares posted on websites because after all their geared at tourists. Any advise?...

Rhine in Flames or Rhine River lights

Can anyone tell me the difference between these 2 nights, specifically on 9-18-09 and 9-19-09. We will be in Bacharach. I see both nights have fireworks cruises.

by Agentur Rita Hermann GmbH

Just google a bit and look at these sites. They are all owned by this agency itself. You don%26#39;t even have to check the imprints or the whois records. Easy to spot by their crude webdesign and endless keywords and repeated links. A champion in just linking on their own sites or the ones from customers they do webhosting/webdesign for. Not even a single link to the official site of a town or tourist office in the area. The domain grabbings and attitude of this company are an imposition for all involved with tourism in this area.

|||

Has anyone done the %26quot;Rhine River lights%26quot; cruise? It seemed like a fun way to visit the wine festival in Oberwesel without driving.

Train to Den Haag from Koln/Bonn airport

Hi,

We are flying into the Koln/Bonn airport and can%26#39;t figure out how we get a train from there to Den Haag. I%26#39;ve visited bahn.de and got this info: Kln Hbf - Den Haag HS

Is the Kln Hbf station in the airport? If not, how do we get to it?

MANY Thanks!

|||

No. Köln Hbf (for Hauptbahnhof) is the main railway station of Cologne (Köln).

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: CGN (for Cologne/Bonn Airport)

To: Den Haag

The German name of the airport station is %26quot;Köln/Bonn Flughafen%26quot;. But you can use the airport code (CGN) as a shortcut.

|||

Abalada,

Thank you for your quick response. I did what you said and I received a schedule from the airport to Den Haag. I guess I%26#39;m a bit confused because the Eurail site says there is no train station at the Cologne/Bonn Airport. What am I missing?

|||

%26gt; I guess I%26#39;m a bit confused because the Eurail site says there is no train station at the Cologne/Bonn Airport. What am I missing?

Which Eurail site?

http://www.eurail.com

Eurail is just a marketing organisation for rail passes outside of Europe founded by the (ex-)national railway companies, like e.g. DB (German Rail) or NS (Dutch Railways). And they and their timetables are also the most reliable and up-to-date resources for connections.

The (printed) Eurail timetable and maps are just an excerpt of the most important routes for tourists. By far not complete. The DB timetable knows about 400.000 stops in Europe.

The train station at Cologne/Bonn airport is also pretty new (opened June 2004). Thus it can be that the airport is at some places still listed without any train connection.

The list at the Eurail site lists just the airports with intercontinental flights. There are more airports with a train station, e.g.:

Cologne, Hannover, Dresden, Friedrichshafen, Nuremberg (U-Bahn), Berlin-Tempelhof (U-Bahn), Leipzig/Halle

|||

Thanks Abalada!

You are the best! I thought The Eurail timetable was the Holy Grail! I can now stop beating my head against the wall!

|||

The best timetable I think is Cooks European Timetable (available in book form). The route should be from Koln Hbf (main station)to Den Haag CS (Central Station) rather than to Den Haag (Hollands Spoor), which is the main line to Amsterdam and Brussels and outside the city centre.

|||

%26gt; The best timetable I think is Cooks European Timetable (available in book form).

It is, just as the Eurail thing, just a compilation of most touristically important routes. The best (most complete) timetables are still the official ones from the national railway organisations.

|||

... the complete printed timetable for Germany is however not really handy for a traveller. Only if one plans to travel just with the timetable but without any further luggage ;-)

But if one needs something to fill a bookshelf cheaply - the %26quot;Kursbuch%26quot; comes in 8 volumes, a railroad map and a train list volume. And this for just EUR 13.

|||

There a no direct trains from Den Haag to Cologne. One can take it from Amsterdam or Utrecht. Look on the NS website for the timetable as simple as that!

|||

I need to go from CGN airport to Utrecht in the afternoon hours after 13:50h. When I have a train to utrecht and is it the same train that goes to Den Haag?

|||

I need Tips and advice on Bavarian Alps and surrounding

I will be traveling to the Bavarian Alps in July this year and will be staying at the Familienparadies Neubichler Alm (I have a 3 year old son) My wife and I are into cultural travel, history and are in love with medieval towns. Can anyone give me some advice as where to go around that area. I would be having a car but would not like to travel distances which are more than 1.5 hours max 2 hours. Also, we would love to visit some place maybe a monastery who brew their own beer which we can taste (this would be a bonus)

Thank you all in advance

|||

I think %26quot;Kloster Andechs%26quot; would be the right destination for you.

It is about 160km/100mi away from your Hotel.

|||

In first place of course next door Salzburg, Bad Reichenhall and Berchtesgadener Land.

http://www.salzburg.info

http://www.bad-reichenhall.de

http://www.berchtesgadener-land.info

Herrenchiemsee New Palace on Herreninsel island in lake Chiemsee

now more medieval:

Burghausen which has Europe%26#39;s longest castle

For the bonus part maybe check out

Klosterbräu Au am Inn

http://www.kloster-braeu.de/neu/brauerei.htm

Google maps shows %26#39;Au am Inn%26#39;, near Wasserburg. The monastery with its brewery and the very yummy beer is the largest part of the village, you can%26#39;t miss it when you get there.

neuschwanstein tour by viator.com

i will be there in june - arrive fri june 19th - depart tues june 23

1 - is it true that stores are closed mondays and therefore better to do the tour on the sunday?

i was looking at booking the tour online - for my 12 year old daughter and i with www.viator.com the tour is $86 canadian (not including the 8 euros entrance fee) - this seems pretty reasonably-priced and i hear the best way to avoid long lines up and missing out on the tour

2 - is this the best day? method of going?

thank you for your help

|||

1. Stores are closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Many museums are closed on Monday. I guess that%26#39;s why the recommendation to make this trip on a Monday.

2. Cheapest/most flexible method is to use public transport.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Munich

To: Hohenschwangau

You can make this trip on the Bavaria Ticket. EUR 28,00 for both of you together. Covers the trains to Füssen, the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau and also all local public transport in Munich. This ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Hohenschwangau bus stop is next to the ticket center for Neuschwanstein Castle.

You can reserve tickets online by yourself

http://www.hohenschwangau.de/546.0.html

Please note that you have to collect the reserved tickets latest one hour before your tour starts. If you walk up to the castle this will need a fair share of the remaining time. You can also use the special bus service to St. Mary%26#39;s Bridge or the horse carriages. A tour bus won%26#39;t bring you any closer to Neuschwanstein Castle than the public bus from Füssen.

Also of interest:

- Hohenschwangau Castle

- Tegelberg / summer luge

http://www.tegelbergbahn.de/227.0.html

- the town Füssen itself

http://www.fuessen.de

Füssen has a latitude of 47° 34%26#39; N (Ottawa e.g. of 45° 25%26#39;) - thus it will get dark only towards 11pm this time of the year.

|||

Almost all stores in Germany are closed on Sundays. Many museums will be closed on Mondays. For Neuschwanstein itself, the day won%26#39;t make any difference.

You can get to Neuschwanstein inexpensively using the Bavaria day group (2-5 people) train ticket for 28€ for the two of you. This ticket also includes all public means of transportation on that day in Munich and also the bus from Fuessen to Hohenschwangau. If you go on a Saturday or Sunday, you can leave anytime after midnight, and on a weekday the ticket is valid only after 9AM, but on weekday or weekend until 3AM the next day. You can notice this is much cheaper than that tour, and anyway that tour only takes you to Hohenschwangau, you will still have to pay for the only tours of the palace which are through the ticket office.

Go to www.bahn.de , change it to English and you can find out transportation details. Use: From: Munich To: Hohenschwangau . Click for travel details about the bus. The bus stop in Hohenschwangau is close to the ticket office. For a visit to the interior of Neuschwanstein, at www.hohenschwangau.de you can make reservations for a tour in English (I recommend this to not to have to wait for a tour and to be guaranteed of one). You have to pick up your tickets at the ticket office in Hohenschwangau at least an hour before your tour, so use that to calculate an acceptable tour time.

|||

It%26#39;s really not difficult at all to go via public transportation (train and bus) and reserve the tickets yourself. I did it with a ten-year-old and it was a good trip. We used the bayern pass as described above.

|||

ok i think i%26#39;ll do this on our own - assuming we can leave right from main/central station in munich anytime on a sunday (versus after 9am) with a bayern pass for 28 Euros for the two of us

would you recommed i book for tours of both castles? about 2 hours apart?

thanks again for your help

|||

Sunday is the best choice in this case for this trip.

If you book a tour through both castles the schedule is fix. First will come Hohenschwangau castle. Than a reasonable time later (but not your choice) the tour through Neuschwanstein castle.

|||

You might want to print out the train schedule before you leave. Be sure to get the details -- it looks like you will have to change trains. Believe me, it is really easy. The schedule will tell you what track the trains depart from, and at what time. Just follow the schedule. The bus from Fuessen to Hohenschwangau leaves from directly behind the train station and is marked %26quot;Schloss%26quot; (castle). The bus will let you off at the tourist information office in Hohenschwangau, which is very close to the ticket office. If you%26#39;ve ordered your tickets on line (a very good idea) you can get in a special line for pre-ordered tickets.

Always check the train/bus schedule when you get off, to find out when the last and next-to-last train/bus leaves. If possible, avoid the last train/bus to your destination if it involves a change -- you don%26#39;t want the stress of worrying about missing the last connection for the day. If you do miss a connection, check with the train ticket office and they can probably reroute you. We missed a connection to the last train of the day to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and the ticket office rerouted us on another train coming down the track right then. It%26#39;s exciting to look back on but rather stressful to live through.

Have a great trip!

|||

i checked the db bahn schedule and typed in munich to fussen and then munich to hohenschwangau - if i am reading this correctly on sunday june 19th there are departures at 751,819 and 919 am - looks like there are 2 changes with the 751 and 919 trains - assuming that%26#39;s the train to fussen, then the bus to hohenschwangau - finally arriving at either 1113 or 1213

how long after arrival at hohenschwangau should i allow to book for a tour - i figure we%26#39;ll do the %26quot;king%26#39;s tour%26quot; and do both castles - i know you said once i pick a time for the 1st castle, they will automatically give me the time for the 2nd

thanks again for all your help and patience with my questions - being on my own with my daughter, i want to make sure i am completely organized

|||

I read the schedule that way too. I%26#39;d allow at least 1 1/2 hrs after your scheduled arrival, so you can have plenty of time to get the tickets and walk or ride up the mountain to the castle. You might consider riding up (bus or horse-drawn carriage) and walking down. Once you%26#39;re through with the castles, there are hiking trails around, and Fussen is a nice place to explore too.

|||

thanks you!

Stag Do at Volkfest

Im looking at having my party of 7 stag do at this years Volkfest can anybody advise

1. if Stuggart is a good venue for a group of 7, 30 yr olds for a stag weekend

2 advise on the price of beer

3. Any good 4 star hotels to stop in, for the festival

Many thanks

|||

The Cannstatter Volksfest ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ) is the world%26#39;s second largest beer festival and the world%26#39;s largest fun festival with lots of rides, many of which are more typical of a large amusement park. It is in Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) from 25Sept to 11Oct.

All would certainly enjoy both the excellent Mercedes Benz and Porsche Museums. There are also a few other automobile-related sights such as the recreated workshop of Daimler where the first automobile was built, and his birth house in Schorndorf which now hosts a museum about him and has the world%26#39;s first motorcycle.

Stuttgart is the largest city in Germany with vineyards, and they are extensive, making it a rarity like Lyon, France, with extensive vineyards within a large city. So besides the beer festival, you can imbibe wine from the many Weinstube%26#39;s and Besenwirthschaft%26#39;s. The tourist office offers nice free brochure on suggested walks through the vineyards with nice views and many wineries, Weinstube%26#39;s and Besenwirtschaft%26#39;s along the way ( www.stuttgarter-weinwanderweg.de ).

Stuttgart also has good nightlife, but I%26#39;m too old to participate in it.

Stuttgart also hosts the world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival, Fruehlingsfest ( www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de only in German) which is from mid-April to early May (this year 3May).

I believe beer at the festival is between 8-9€ a Mass (liter), the price is probably mentioned somewhere on the website. In other places a half liter will probably be 3-3.50€.

Unlike in Munich, most hotels don%26#39;t jack up the price tremendously during this time, except for a very few exceptions near the fairgrounds. I would recommend staying near the center of Stuttgart and using the excellent frequent public transportation to go to the festival, there is a special U-bahn that goes right to the center of it every 10 minutes, and several others that go to the edges, and also S-bahns near the edge. Among other ways, hotels in Stuttgart are bookable through the tourist office website above. Some possible hotels fitting your criteria are the Le Meriden Stuttgart, Unger, Royal, Kronen-Hotel, Maritim Hotel, and Best Western Ketterer.

|||

Its a great choice I%26#39;ve been twice, only the Munich October Fest is bigger.

Running in Cologne

I%26#39;m going to be spending about 2 weeks in Cologne. I%26#39;m looking for any info on Running, like are there 5k races or such in germany? Here in the US there are tons of races, just having a hard time finding any info besides the Cologne marathon. Any info would be great.

Thanks

|||

haven%26#39;t seen any info on 5k races, but if you just want to run it is a beautiful city for that. You can run along the Rhine, the city is laid out well for running and if you are outside of the city there are hiking areas that would work great as well.

|||

Don%26#39;t know about any %26quot;official%26quot; races except the Cologne marathon, but Cologne is a great city for running. Just get to the Rhine river somewhere and it%26#39;s not far to some nice green running spots at the river, away from the heavy traffic. The %26quot;green belt%26quot; around the west city, especially in Hiroshima Nagasaki Park and Volksgarten are also great for running.

|||

I lived in Koln a few years ago and there were loads of road races, but I can%26#39;t remember at which time of year they were but have a look at this website it gives that dates of a lot of runs in the local area,

Motel One

Is Motel One in Mitte a good place to spend a week in August?

|||

Hello,

I would say that the location is very central, next to good restaurants, cafes etc.. To the eastern city-center it%26#39;s a walk of aprox. 20 min. Perfect connection to bus and subway in front of hotel.

Maybe a bit noisy, as it is located directly on a busy roundabout.

Can not say anything about the rooms or breakfast.

I stayed at the Motel One in Frankfurt (airport area). It was cheap, attractive, and clean. I%26#39;d go back if they are all similar, which it looks like they are.

Breakfast was a pricey.

We stayed there for 2 nights and thought the hotel was great. Simple, yet modern, reasonable. Rooms were on the small side, but very comfortable. We would not hesitate to stay there again.

As for location, we were new to Berlin and had my cousin as a guide. We just followed him! :) But I do know that there was access tot he train right there by the hotel, so I felt we were close to everything.
