Frankfurt to Mannheim by train

We are arriving at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday march 20th at 12:20pm and wish to travel by train to Mannheim .

Please advise station details and times of trains from airport to Mannheim

|||

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: FRA airport

To: Mannheim

|||

Since there are two rail stations in Frankfurt airport about 200-300 m apart from each other, you should go for Fernbahnhof (aka AiRail Terminal) and not for the Regionalbahnhof.

|||

We are arriving at Frankfurt Airport on Friday 1st May 2009 at 18.15 . Return flight to Heathrow on Monday 4th May from Frankfurt Airport at 14.55. Please will you advise train details to and from Mannheim to co inside with the above flight details

|||

Use abalada%26#39;s link, which takes you to the information page of German railways, and enter your dates.

We won%26#39;t do all your homework for you here...

|||

Hi all,

How long time do you think it takes to walk from the arrivals gate to the Fernbahnhof? Will I make that in 25 minutes if I have checked luggage? It sounds improbable, doesn%26#39;t it. :)

|||

25 minutes after landing or after getting your luggage?

I would at least suggest to calculate

45 minutes after landing at Terminal 1

60 minutes after landing at Terminal 2

before getting on a train.

Keep in mind:

1. there are frequent trains from Frankfurt Airport to Mannheim. Normally at least 2 per hour.

2. Normal price tickets are flexible. You can take any later train on the same day.

3. You can always buy tickets on spot. Train tickets cannot sell out in Germany (there is no compulsory reservation system).

Cheap apartment rentals in Köln

My colleague and I received a scholarship for a 2 month language course in Köln this summer, and the accommodation offered by the course organizer is staying with a German family. Apparently, we would be housed on the right side of the Rhein, and it would cost 960 euros for each of us (I assume we would be split up), for 8 weeks. (I%26#39;m not sure if meals are included?)

So, I guess my first question would be - how does this option sound? Has anybody had any experience in similar situations(perhaps in Köln?^^)? I%26#39;m a little hesitant about spending 2 months with a family of strangers.

The second question would, of course, be - could we find a deal in the similar price range, for an aparment? (I%26#39;ve already looked on sublet.com and homeaway.com.) If we don%26#39;t arrange this online, is it reasonable to believe that we could find a cheap place on the spot (once we arrive)?

A flight procedure question

I wish to go to Berlin in August to see some of the World Athletics Championships. Is there a problem if I purchase a roundtrip flight (good deals now) from US to Berlin with several connections along the way but do not go all the way through to Berlin? I would only have a carry-on bag. I will eventually end up in Berlin and fly out of Berlin but one of the connection stops is near where I want to do some pre-sightseeing. My original plan was to fly to Berlin then train out to where I wanted to pre-sightsee.

I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback

|||

Make that place a stopover on your trip to Berlin. If you do not take one of your earlier flights, it invalidates the rest of the airline ticket. Another alternative is to have an open jaw ticket, arriving at one airport and departing from another, the cost should be the average of the roundtrip ticket to both.

|||

Marco: Thanks for responding!!

Does that mean that the return to USA ticket would be invalidated? Should I fess up to the airline when I arrive at the stopover from which I want to exit the flight sequence to Berlin?

|||

Yes I think it would. Normally return/round trip ticket is cheaper, sometimes cheaper than a one-way/single even, so if you don%26#39;t fly out your return is annulled as they think you are trying to beat the system and pay less.

The only exception is with the budget carriers where you have an option of booking a single or a return flight, with each journey having a separate price. If you don%26#39;t fly out with them it doesn%26#39;t invalidate the return. That applies to airlines such as easyjet and Airberlin.

|||

When I recently booked tickets for our upcoming trip, I was able to actually save money by flying into Berlin and out of Munich on AA. I first tried different flight combinations with different cities and found that worked the best for us...just use the multiple destination feature on the website.

|||

%26quot;Does that mean that the return to USA ticket would be invalidated?%26quot;

Yes.

|||

Have a look to see what you can do on the Lufthansa website. Almost all of Lufthansa%26#39;s intercontinental flights go via Frankfurt or Munich which are their 2 hubs. If one of the places you want to visit on the way is near one of these airports try booking a return airfare from your departure city to Munich or Frankfurt and then just a one way fare from Berlin back to which ever of these 2 airports you chose to go to to start. This way you will take advantage of the cheaper return price for the part of it and only have to pay the more expemsive one way option for the flight from Berlin to one of these 2.

You will probably find even if you book from your departure city to Berlin return it will be via one og these 2 hubs anyway.

Kiel - Any cute towns nearby?

Having been stationed in Germany for three years with

all the beautiful little towns, I cannot believe that Kiel and it%26#39;s environs are not worth a look.

Are there no points of interest or nearby cities w/o going to Lubeck or Hamburg?

Suggestions, PLEASE.

Berlin Hbf (tief) to TV Tower in Alexanderplatz

I%26#39;m considering taking the train from Warnemunde to Berlin%26#39;s Hbf (tief) station. How close is that to the TV Tower in Alexanderplatz? Would it be easy to get a cab and how long would it take? I%26#39;ll have 20 minutes after I arrive by train to make a Segway tour that starts at 10:00.

Thanks for your help - Christy

|||

Buy a ticket to Berlin Alexanderplatz. Same price like to Berlin Hbf. The DB timetable suggest here 8 minutes to get from level -2 to level +2. Without luggage you can make this in less. From track 15 there are S-Bahn trains every few minutes to Alexanderplatz station. Travel time is 6-7 minutes.

Arriving at 09:58 is still sufficient. They won%26#39;t start at before 11:01 ;-)

And if you can make it on a S-Bahn earlier you%26#39;ll be there in time anyway.

Don%26#39;t think taxi is faster. Alone to get to the taxi booth you%26#39;ll need more time than to platform 15 (lift - a few meters - other lift). Or if you%26#39;re more sporty use the escalators.

Than the taxis don%26#39;t have such an exclusive way cut through Berlin like the railway. Thus travel time will be twice as long. If you have luck.

Thank you! I appreciate your help! Christy

Bus and Train Station and Accomodations

Are the bus station and train station in Freising the same place? or does the bus from the airport just make a stop at the train station? Are there machines at the Freising train station to buy Bayern tickets? Any recommendations for a small family owned guesthouse, hotel or inn close to the bus station for just a one night stay before going to the airport the next day?

|||

%26gt; Are the bus station and train station in Freising the same place?

Yes. But #635 is the one to the airport.

efa.mvv-muenchen.de/mvv/mvv/freising.pdf

%26gt; or does the bus from the airport just make a stop at the train station?

No. This bus really just connects the station with the airport.

%26gt; Are there machines at the Freising train station to buy Bayern tickets?

Yes.

But you don%26#39;t need a Bayern Ticket to go to the airport.

Single ticket for the bus to the airport is EUR 2,30 (children 6-14 years EUR 1,20).

Best place to buy a "short-term" cell phone in Frankfurt?

Will be arriving at the airport, but picking up our rental car downtown. I%26#39;d heard of someone getting a good deal in London on a low-end cell phone - $50 incl SIM card and $25 in airtime - and would love to find a deal like that... but would rather not spend much time hunting around for it. Any suggestions?

If a deal like that isn%26#39;t to be found, I%26#39;ll definitely look at getting an unlocked GSM phone here in Canada and buying a SIM card there, just thought I would check here first for suggestions and advice. Thanks!

Barto

|||

I borrowed a friend%26#39;s unlocked, GSM phone and purchased a SIM card at the airport for 40 Euros which was more than enough for 3 weeks spent in Germany. If I remember correctly the cheapest cell phone I saw for sale in Terminal 1 was for about 70 euros.? Try to get a phone before you leave. I think there are some stores on Zeil in the city that sell from what I%26#39;ve read on this forum - don%26#39;t know about good deals, however.

If you encounter a company called rentacell, run as fast as you can from them. They rent SIM chips and others who have posted have not been able to get an 800 Euro security deposit credited to their accounts.

|||

For a low-end cell phones for little money you need to go to the big discounters - Tchibo, Alsi, Lidl.. while the latter two are usually outside of city centers, you will find Tchibo (a coffee seller) in just about any shopping area, pedestrian zone, bigger train stations etc. Probably at the airport too, but surely at many standorts in Frankfurt itself.

Vodafone

Sony Ericsson J110i

EUR 29,95 (incl. EUR 5,00 in airtime)

Vodafone 125

EUR 39,95 (incl. EUR 5,00 in airtime)

These are the cheapest offers of such packages by the two biggest network providers. Basically available around any corner. Not that you can find even better deals.

A SIM-Card alone is typically EUR 19,90 (incl. EUR 10,00 in airtime)

|||

Wow, great replies, and quick, too!

I had read about some of the problems with Rentacell - definitely looks like one to avoid at all costs.

Google Maps showed a number of locations for Tchibo, so that gives us some good options right off the bat.

If I come across a %26#39;screaming deal%26#39; here for an unlocked phone before we go, then I%26#39;ll do that and just get a SIM card after arrival...otherwise will check out Tchibo or some of the other names mentioned.

Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and thanks to all who responded so quickly!

Last summer I took my unlocked GSM phone to Germany. I bought a SIM card in the Frankfurt airport at a Place called FOTEC in the %26quot;B%26quot; terminal. It was with a company called Blauworld and cost 39 Euros which included a 10-Euro call credit. Their rate for calls back to N America is a whopping 9 cents Eu per minute.

I saw the same card later at Tchibo stores for 19 Euros.

|||

http://www.blauworld.de

SIM Card is now EUR 19,95 (incl. EUR 10,00 in airtime).

|||

All of the phones listed above by ‘abalada’ are dual-band [900/1800 MHz] and will only work in Europe. If the phones are also ‘locked’, they would only work with a T-Mobile DG or Vodaphone SIM card. 30 € ≈ $46 USD / 40 € ≈ $61 USD

eBay offers used ‘unlocked’ quad-band Motorola V180 cell phones for $29 + $9.95 USD. This GSM phone will work world-wide with any SIM card. search ‘v180 quad’

|||

Yes, eBay would probably be the %26#39;best%26#39; solution, but I%26#39;ve run out of time to get something shipped over in time. I do have one local option of an unlocked Palm Treo 600, so I might go for that and just get the SIM card by itself.

Thanks for all the info!!

Barto

|||

Are there prepaid SIM cards in Germany that can also be used in Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland?

I%26#39;ll be spending the most no. of days in Germany, but would like to find a SIM card that I could use for the few days that I am out of Germany.

|||

will my blauworld SIM bought in Frankfurt airport (to avoid the annoyance of trying to make it work if I buy at grocery store) work in Netherlands and Belgium?

thanks

Bus connection between Nuremberg and Karlovy Vary?

In late August we would like to travel by bus between Nuremberg and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic. Does such a thing exist or is train the only means of transportation. Thanks for any help.

|||

No buses.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Nuremberg

To: Karlovy Vary

You can use the Bavaria-Bohemia Ticket for this trip. EUR 33,00 for 2-5 persons. Covers the regional trains to Karlovy Vary - there are no others anyway. Plus all other local public transport in Nuremberg (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses). This ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

|||

Thanks so much, we%26#39;ll certainly look into the Bavarian-Bohemian ticket, it sounds great.

|||

Is the Bavaria-Bohemia Pass available to purchase in the USA or only in Germany? On arrival in Nuremberg we want to immediately board a train to Karlovy Vary (via Cheb?). Must we purchase the Pass only at the rail station?

Thanks again for any info.

Looking for reviews/help on Holiday Park of Tennenbronn

Hi there - we are looking for a family holiday destination in the Black Forest and I am looking for advice on the holiday village of Ferienpark Tennenbronn.

This will be our first family visit to Germany with our two children aged 8 and 4. I like the look of the bigger chalets but pictures/info is a bit sketchy.

We are looking for clean, comfortable accommodation, nice pool and things to do in the local area - some sun would be good too! I am hoping this area of Germany might provide all this - any help/suggestions

much appreciated...

Many thanks

|||

I don%26#39;t know the park myself, but according to some German reviews it seems to be a very quiet and clean place, ideal for small children, a good place for hiking, jaunts, etc.. However, the lodgings seem to be in a seventies style and a little run-down.

%26gt;some sun would be good too%26lt;

Tennenbronn lies relatively high, so it could well be fresh and changeable.

|||

Many thanks for that - do you know of any other nice holiday villages?

|||

From my own experience i don%26#39;t know any. A good park seems to be Sonnenmatte on the Swabian Alb:

If it has to be the black forest, your kids perhaps would enjoy a farm holiday?:

I like the idea of the farm holiday - the accommodation looked good although we are travelling with another family with older children who perhaps need more entertainment.Many thanks for all you help I will look though it all in detail.

Expat or English Pubs

Sometimes on trips we like to go to an Expar or English pub before dinner, just so we have people to chat with.

Could you please tell me where these might be located.

Afterward we like to have dinner in local restaurants.

Should we include Trier

We will have only 7 days in Germany including the day we arrive. Will be spending most of our time in Bavaria. We have already been to Rome, should we still try to see Trier?

|||

From Bavaria, Trier is far, far out of your way.

|||

Thank you for your response. We actually fly into Frankfurt and I thought that could be a first stop for a tired and weary traveler. I think that since we have been to Rome I will skip it on this trip. Thanks again!

3 days in Dresden: City only or include outskirts

Hi all,

I am visiting Dresden in mid August for 3 days. With 3 days should I limit myself to the attractions within the city or can I afford to squeeze in the outskirts?

|||

Definitely visit the outskirts. Do the steam boat ride to Pillnitz Palace.

An excursion to Moritzburg Palace, Meissen or another castle in the area would be doable within the three days. Or to the National Park. Too many options :-)

|||

Prague in the Czech Republic could be an option as it is only 2 hours by train from Dresden. If you got an early train from Dresden and get a later one from Prague back to Dresden, you should be able to see a lot of Prague (Main sites, not including museums).

When I went to Prague last year, I spent a day in Dresden and went back to Prague the same day and saw a lot. I thought Dresden was a better city than Prague and it was the highlight of my trip.

|||

Visiting the town of Meissen (as suggsetd), with a stop at the famous Porzellan Manufaktur would make a nice outing. My favorite, however, is a visit to the Bastei and the Festung Koenigstein, both with their great views of the Swiss Saxony region and the Elbe river.

Go to the %26quot;Search%26quot; box at the top of this German Formum, enter Dresden (left) and Bastei (right) and you will get a whole host of suggestions and impressions, including transport advise. But don%26#39;t shortchange Dresden itself.

Bus Terminal at Munich Airport

Are there machine to buy the Bayern tickets by the bus station between the two airport terminals or is there a more convenient place?

|||

I think you have to get tickets from the machines above the S-bahn station. This is in the shopping arcade between the terminals.

|||

If you just want to go to Freising by bus #635 as I assume, you can buy the tickets as well from the driver. Single ticket is EUR 2,30 (children 6-14 years EUR 1,20).

|||

Our plan is to continue on by train to Nuremberg.

Schedule questions

I am trying to finalize our trip to Germany for June.

I originally had one day in the Rhine just to see Marksburg and do the river cruise. Not sure whether to leave it or not, but it would be the day of arrival. Otherwise here is what I have come up with.

Day1 Arrive in Frankfurt early

Go to Moselkern to see Burg Eltz

and stay for the night in Beilstein.

(We will have a car)

Day2 Drive to Rothenburg

Crime and Punishment Museum

Alter at St. Jakob%26#39;s

Night Watchmans Tour

Day3 Drive to Munich

Deutches Museum and whatever time allows

Day4 Berchtesgaden/Lake Konigssee

Day5 Salzburg/Hallstatt (Sleep in Berchtesgaden)

Day6 Fussen (Castles)

Day7 Can either spend 1 more day in Germany or

depart to Switzerland.

Thank you for your input.

Thanks for your input.

|||

going to be a bit busy!

As much as I enjoy the Rhine, Mosel and the Burg Eltz, I think I would probably cut that out and head directly to Rothenburg (maybe by way of Heidelberg). Plan some stops along the way, the Neckar leaving Heidelberg has some interesting sights and you can go this direction to Rothenburg.

I think that your schedule for B%26#39;gaden, Salzburg and Hallstadt, Fuessen might be a bit too ambitious also.

Might want to narrow it down a bit. You will be spending a lot of time on the road.

|||

Thank you for your input! I will reassess the schedule. Believe it or not I have already scaled it down some! LOL! There is so much to see it is really a difficult decision. Any other input is greatly appreciated.

|||

What day are you arriving in Frankfurt? Someone might know of a festival or event that you might be able to take advantage of on your trip.

Let us know what airport you%26#39;re home from, that might be helpful to complete the loop. Are you leaving from Switzerland?

|||

We are arriving in Frankfurt on 6/23 in the AM. We will be returning home from Zurich, Switzerland and are spending the last 3 days of our trip in Switzerland.

Traveling from Frankfurt to Paris

I have never been to Germany but will be visiting in a little less than a month.

I am wondering if it is possible to drive from Frankfurt to Paris or are the borders closed to this. What are the alternatives and which, if you know, is the cheapest way?

|||

Closed Borders??? What in the world are you talking about? This is France and Germany you are talking about, both members of the EU. You go from one to the other just like going from Ohio to Michigan. You might want to check out a few guidebooks from the library or do some online reading.

The easiest and fastest way is to take the train from Frankfurt to Paris. Takes less than 4 hours. You could never drive it that fast. The trains go around 200 km an hour.

|||

%26gt;The trains go around 200 km an hour.

Beyond Metz the trains regularly run at 320 km/h - try to drive that fast :-)

|||

Taking the train would be the quickest way to get from Frankfurt to Paris. You can go to the websit below to look at times and costs:

www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

Trains are clean, fast, run on time. Only downside is not being able to just go stop when you see something and spend an hour or two.

Good luck.

|||

Thank you all for your advice.

I%26#39;m sure I will have plenty more questions. I will be visiting a family member in the army and they were unsure about if you could drive to Paris, LOL

Does anyone suggest a specific hotel? We are trying to have a budget conscious good time.

We were hoping there would be some one and two day tours offered by the closest army base as there have been since they arrived but there are none the week that I%26#39;ll be there so now we are trying to put together an itinerary to see Paris.

|||

Which Army base and in which city are you looking for a hotel? The USO offers lots of tours, but frankly it is very easy to get around the country here without being on a tour.

|||

My family member is stationed in Wiesbaden but I don%26#39;t know the name of the base.

I think we were so dead set on going to the tours through the USO that we didn%26#39;t look into anything really on our own and now we%26#39;re panicking.

As for hotels, I was just trying to get an idea. My family member doesn%26#39;t know much about the area as they have only been there a few months so they are just as lost as I am. I however am more computer savvy and know that there are people like you all that I can reach out to and get info.

|||

Weisbaden Army base is in Wiesbaden. They even have their own hotel, though you can get cheaper places with considerable more charm. Your family member can at least go over to the USO and ask for assistance.

From Wiesbaden it is easy to just get on a train or a boat, and go down the Rhein river to all kinds of nice little towns, with castles and everything. Mainz is right next door with a fabulous cathedral and lots of Roman ruins. Frankfurt is a half hour away and it has lots of historical things to see as well as something like 46 museums and art galleries. Heidelberg is about 1.5 hours away and that is truly a lovely town. Cologne is probably less than 2 hours away if you take the slow train and I do recommend the slow train. There are vinyards to visit all over the place, festivals going on everywhere, like jousting tournaments, wine fests, this week in Frankfurt, we are having a dragon boat fest and at the end of the month a HUGE international gymnastics festival which will be having a gigantic party on the river every night.

You say you are computer savvy, so why not get out a map, look at places near Wiesbaden, and start googling. If you see a place that looks interesting, google it (most towns will have a website and many will be in English) then come back and ask us about it, since different people on here are knowledgable about different places and things, like trains. It helps to start a seperate thread about this.

Taking a train to Paris is not going to solve your problem of not knowing what to see or do once you get here. In fact you will find people in Germany to be a bit more friendly and be willing to speak a bit more English than in Paris or France in general.

|||

Thanks anyway.

I know how to look up things on the computer but it is quite different when you are from a totally different country. I travel all over the US and plan it from my computer but am skeptical of doing do so in Germany.

The information thus far has been helpful.

If anyone else has suggestions for places to go and ways to get there, I%26#39;m open. If not, have a great day.

|||

You just had some great suggestions in the post before your reply...why don%26#39;t you follow up on those, and do check websites found all over Trip Advisor. The Middle Rhine Gorge is just a few kilometers away, and as already posted, full of vineyards and castles. Wiesbaden is very well located for travel to it and has good train connections..I have travled through there many times.

As already suggested, keep checking this site and read other%26#39;s post. When a website is listed, click on. Surely the site%26#39;s pictures will give you a good idea of all the wonderful places to visit. It%26#39;s not that foreign--it%26#39;s an adventure!

Last, if doing it on your own doesn%26#39;t sound like what you want to do, you or family should in touch with the Wiesbaden USO--they surely have many tours available.

Itinerary Help - Vienna - Salzburg - Munich

Hello All,

We are planing to fly down for memorial day weekend.

Day 1

We will be arriving in Munich on Friday May 22nd 9-50am.

Take the train directly to Vienna (Spend a Night in Vienna).

Day2

Spend the next day in Vienna.

Day3

Take the train to Salzburg, Put our luggage in Locker, Look around Salzburg, Take the train to Munich.

Day4

Spend the day in Munich

Day5

Fly back to Chicago.

Is this doable or am I crazy.

|||

You are crazy.

|||

Crazy. Spend first day and night in Munich, next day also, leave around 4pm for Salzburg, evening in S%26#39;burg next day in Salzburg. Head back via Chiemsee or Berchtesgaden.

Vienna is beautiful..I think you will have to choose between Salzburg and Vienna. Which one do you really want to see the most?

|||

I still think a long weekend to Europe is nuts, period. The jet lag alone will affect your trip. If you are bent on doing this, stay in one place instead of doing fly bys.

JMO

|||

There are enough sights within Munich to spend at least 3 days. Take one day trip outside the city and that wraps it up.

|||

Seems to be a quorum that your proposed itinerary is, shall we say, less than ideal. Since you are landing in Munich, my opinion is that you should stay there the entire time. There is more than enough to do in Munich to keep you happy for 7 - 10 days, let alone 3. Why would you want to spend so many hours on trains and all the hassle of relocating, packing and unpacking, etc. when you have such a short time in the area? Not to even mention the jet lag problem. While Vienna and Salzburg have their charms, in my experience Munich beats them hand down.

3 Person Hotel Room in city center??

We are three girls traveling to Germany for a week in June...

Does anyone know if it is possible to book a %26quot;double room%26quot; meaning two double beds?

We want to stay in the city center and will only be using the room to crash at night as we are taking day trips practically everyday so don%26#39;t want to pay for a 2nd room!!

The Mercure offers all 7 nights for $750 but that is based on two people sharing...could we slip a third in without being noticed!!

Also, if we are planning day trips to Fussen, Garmisch, Innsbruck would you recommend staying maybe 2/3 night somewhere closer to the two instead of traveling back and forth each day?

Many thanks for your help!!

|||

This hotel has nice rooms and a very good breakfast for a bit less, including the triple rooms!

Duesseldorf airport to Meerbusch

Hi, how long do you think it takes to drive from Meerbusch to Frankfurt airport please?

|||

Sorry I meant from Meerbusch to Dusseldorf airport....

|||

distance is 13-15 km

same amount in minutes travel time (if you don%26#39;t hit a traffic jam)

Düsseldorf (Weeze) to Dortmund

Hello, can you please advise me on the easiest way to get from Düsseldorf (Weeze) Airport to Dortmund Airport?

I have checked Deutsche-Bahn and there%26#39;s a route from Düsseldorf Flughafen to Dortmund Hbf. I don%26#39;t know if this connects the two airports or if it is necessary that I continue on a new route. If this is so, isn%26#39;t it an easier way?

Thanks.

|||

Weeze airport is some 80 km west of Düsseldorf.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Weeze airport

To: Dortmund airport

NRW fare tickets

covers the bus from Weeze airport to Weeze station. But not the bus from Weeze airport to Kevelaer station.

NRW fare tickets

covers the route from Dortmund Hbf (main train station) to Dortmund Airport by U-Bahn to Aplerbeck and from there by bus (that%26#39;s however not the most convenient route).

AirportExpressBus from Dortmund Hbf to Dortmund Airport and AirportShuttleBus from Holzwicke station to Dortmund Airport are not covered.

lander ticket

Can you guys help. This is a great forum. I have a couple of questions/clarifications.

If going Peiting to Lindau,- trip covered by lander ticket as both in Bavaria? We are travelling on a Friday but it is a public holiday. So can you still buy the lander ticket, 28 euros, or do you have to buy the happy weekend ticket, 37 euros?

The next day, Saturday, we are travelling Lindau to Stuttgart, so will use a happy weekend ticket, but then need to get to Strassbourg. Can you use the happy weekend tickt to get to the last station before Strassbourg and buy the ticket for the last section. We are catching the TGV, Strassbourg to Paris, which on a Sunday you can get for 88 euros for 4. So will train to Strasbourg late Saturday; we are spending the day at the Stuttgart zoo. The cheapest I can see for the 4 of us Stuttgart to Strasbourg is 87 euros. that doesn%26#39;t seem too bad. is there a better way to do this?

Hope you can help

SB

|||

The Bavaria group day train ticket will be fine from Peiting to Lindau.

On Saturday, use the Baden-Wuerttemberg group train day ticket for 28€, it%26#39;s cheaper than the Happy Weekend ticket. Although Lindau is in Bavaria, it is covered by the B-W ticket. Your B-W ticket will also be valid on the Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) buses, U-bahns, and S-bahns. To get to Wilhelma ( www.wilhelma.de ), the combination zoo botanical-garden, take the U-14 from the train station in the direction of Remseck to the Wilhelma stop. (Are you aware of the excellent Mercedes Benz Museum which is loved by all visitors -irregardless of age or gender- and documents the over 120 year history of the automobile and this firm, after all Stuttgart is the birthplace of the automobile?) If you are continuing on to Strasbourg the same day, your ticket is also valid to Kehl, just across the Rhine from Strasbourg. From then on, you will then have to use an inexpensive regular train ticket for the last few kilometers. Otherwise, if you are traveling on Sunday from Stuttgart, just buy another B-W group train ticket to use until Kehl.

Train information can be seen at www.bahn.de , just change to English near the top of the page. Also, select only local transportation, as then the faster long distance IC, EC and ICE trains which you cannot ride with these Lander tickets will not be shown.

|||

Oh, I should mention that the French TGV terminates in Stuttgart, and it may be possible to get limited tickets on it to Paris for 29-39€ per person, if you purchase early enough.

|||

Thanks so much marcopolko,

I have read your earlier posts on Stuttgart and was very informed by them. I think you are right about the Merceded-Benz museum. If we stay the night in Stuttgart and are able to catch our Paris train from here, we will have time to take in more interesting features of the area. I am still considering slowing the pace to allow 2 days in each stop. it just means we will have to cut some destinations from our itinerary at the end.

Help! I left my Camera at Airport gas station!

Its a long shot, but worth a try. I believe I left my Casio digital camera in the restroom of a Gas station near the rental car return at Frankfurt airport (I think it was a shell, but I%26#39;m not sure), It was on my belt and may have fallen off there.

I am desperately trying to find the Ph # for the gas station but have been unable to find it as of yet. The Camera is an older model, but the pictures are extremely important to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,

Thankyou so much! In the pursuit of my missing Camera, I have contacted many different lost and found possibilities, and all I have dealt with in Germany have been most helpful. Much respect to the fine people of Germany, you are remarkable people!

I will keep this forum posted on my progress.

Unfortunately, these stations apparently do not have restrooms (toiletten).

The gas station I was at was very large and had an %26quot;On the run%26quot; store attached. It was near the rental car return, but not actually in the airport.

I%26#39;ll keep trying, now that I remember the %26quot;on the run%26quot; store, maybe that will help - I%26#39;m on a mission.

Thanks again,

hey mark,

then this station was certainly the one:

Esso Frankfurt ; nterschweinstiege 60549 Frankfurt

Telefonnummer: 069-693333

|||

They said is was not there. I have done everything possible: Avis, Delta, Frankfurt Airport, JFK Airport lost and founds, even placed ad on Craigs list and called the gas station where I know I had the camera last, shortly before going into airport.

I am not aware of another Lost and Found in Frankfurt, other then the airport. I guess there is nothing left to do.

Who Knows, maybe I get lucky, but I am losing hope.

Thanks again for your help,

One day trip: Rothenburg or Neuschwanstein?

I have one extra day to spend while staying in Germany and I am trying to decide on the best day trip. Was thinking of taking mikes bike tour day trip to ludwigs castles, but heard alot about Neuschwanstein. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

|||

where do you stay in Germany?

|||

good question: i%26#39;ll be staying in munich

|||

in which case, how does Rothenburg fit in?

Neuschw is, of course, one of Ludwig%26#39;s castles and you%26#39;ll see it on the M B T.

Rothenburg is not in the Alps; I would advocate a stay there, but probably not a day trip from Munich.

|||

if you have a chance to go to Neuschwanstein for the day do it. Also if you can get to Wieskirche and the monastery at Andech (both small detours)all the better.

|||

Rothenburg is great if you like strolling though a quite and tranquil medievil city with huge walls around the town.

Neuschwan is also great, and you must do the tour inside the castle.

Having done both of these myself, if I had to choose only one, I would do the Neuschwan simply for the wow factor when seen for the first time inside and out!

Hope this helps

Trav.

|||

Rothenburg isn%26#39;t a day trip from Munich - it%26#39;s too far away.

Neuschwanstein is the logical choice.

Do 5 Deutschmark coins have value?

Have 5 five DM coins from when I was stationed

in Heidelberg.

Visiting this summer and wonder if they can be

redeemed snd if so, what value.

Thanks in advance.

|||

5 DEM ~ 3.48 USD

You can exchange them only at branches of the Bundesbank (the German Central Bank).

http://www.bundesbank.de/hv/hv.en.php

Select a main branch and than click on %26quot;Filialen%26quot; in the left menu.

The branches are normally only open on weekday mornings.

Or you throw the coin into a collecting box e.g. in a church or museum. Here such coins are collected and exchanged when the amount is high enough to justify a visit of a Bundesbank branch.

|||

Thank you.

|||

You could also speak to a coin shop or post it on eBay -- collectors are still seeking out pre-Euro currencies. It still won%26#39;t be worth much, though.

new berlin pub crawl tour

Hi all

I went on a new berlin pub crawl 12 months ago and as part of the tour they took us to a fairly unique venue.

It was like a big abandoned warehouse - it ha sa huge backyard with sand on the ground. It was over several floors and had a bar on the ground floor and bands/djs playing on the upper levels.

Does anyone know what it is called and its address?

Cheers

Yes, it is the Techeles

eating and drinking in prenzaler berg

Hi all

I am heading to Berlin in June for a long weekend with friends.

We are all in our mid 20s and are staying in Prenzaler Berg - near Senderfeld subway station.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend an online guide or a magazine that can give tips on where to go for eating and drinking?

Also does a gig guide for Berlin exist? I would like to see a band while I am in town and don%26#39;t know where to search.

Cheers

|||

Hi, I can%26#39;t help with the guide/magazine, but I can recommend a restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg - Mao Thai, Wörther Straße 30.

http://www.maothai.de/

Delicious, beautifully presented Thai food and friendly staff.

If it%26#39;s a nice sunny day you could go to the Prater Garten for drinks under the chestnut trees; though they appear to be rebuilding/extending the buildings around it, the big beer garden should still be open.

FKK Sauna/Spa in the area ?

Hi, does anyone know of a good sauna/spa complex in the Düsseldorf region where it is completely textile free ?

I have found the Asia Therme and Wellneuss spa has anybody experience of these ?

Many Thanks

|||

All saunas are textile-free.

|||

There are two saunas in Koln area:

http://www.mediterana.de/

The Mediterana is the best ever, totally naked and a good place to spend the day, evening...It is out of Koln in the direction of Refrath.

This one is closer to town but not as nice:

cigarettes price

I%26#39;d like to know the price of branded cigarettes (pack of 20 ) in Berlin ( Supermarkets , auto machines e.t.c )

Thanks a lot in Advange !

|||

Cigarrettes are not too expensive in Berlin (comapred to England where they are really expensive).

One thing about vending machines that some need you to swipe or insert a card (possibly an ID One) into the machine for it to work to stop kids from buying them. Waiters/barman would be able to help in bars/restaurants

|||

I %26quot;think%26quot; I remember them being about €4 a pack, that was around a year ago ...

|||

I think that they are about 0.20€/each, unless they%26#39;ve raised the price recently.

|||

It depends on the brand, but as a rule a pack of 17 will cost about €4, 24/25 about €5 and 30 about €6. If you use a vending machine, you need to have a German photocard driving licence or ID card or an EC debit card, but as stated waiters and barmen should have a bypass key.

|||

Thanks a lot to all of you !

Karlsplatz Stachus Station

Hi

Can anybody tell me where in Karlsplatz Stachus station I can buy tickets for the S8 train to go to the airport. Also where I would get the train.

Many Thanks

%26gt; Can anybody tell me where in Karlsplatz Stachus station I can buy tickets for the S8 train to go to the airport.

1. MVG info point

2. nearby kiosks

* Mrzyglod Kiosk, Stachus-Shopping Mall

* Müller Kiosk, Stachus-Shopping Mall

* Kestler Kiosk, Stachus-Shopping Mall

* Eggert, Kiosk at the Karlstor (Karl%26#39;s Gate)

3. plenty of ticket machines

%26gt; Also where I would get the train.

Just follow the S-Bahn logo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Munich_S-Bahn

The S-Bahn station at Karlsplatz has only 2 tracks and 1 platform. Track direction Ostbahnhof (labelled %26quot;Ri. Ostbahnhof%26quot; on the above linked map) is the correct one.

|||

...to keep it simple... just look for a ticket counter or ticket machine... just like you would at any british station...

Help with final decision on Hotel

My family and I will be in Munich for 7 nights just after Christmas - 2 adults, 2 teenagers and a child. I have looked and looked at trip advisor with respect to hotels and have come down to the following two hotels - Kings First Class and Hotel Admiral. Hotel Admiral is slightly higher in price (which we are OK with). I was wanting something central (easy to walk to sights as we won%26#39;t have a car), nice to stay in and in a nice area. We will be using the train for day trips out of Munich. Any advice or assistance in choosing will be appreciated.

|||

Admiral is full of Brits as it%26#39;s the hotel for the European Patent Office, so the attorneys stay there. Have you thought of other end of town -i.e. near main station, for ease of travel?

|||

sorry: hence I%26#39;d go for King%26#39;s, out of the two you mention.

|||

I would recommend a 2 bathroom suite at the:

Hotel bayerischerHof

|||

Bayerischer Hof is a good idea. Its one of the grand hotels of Munich where old fashioned values reign supreme...

Which town to stay has best access to Garmisch/Neschwanstein

We are staying in Munich for three nights and then would like to move onto somewhere in a closer location to Neschwanstein, Innsbruck and Garmisch.

Would any one be able to recommend a pretty town with easy access to both of these places for day trips?

Was thinking Hohenschwangau or Oberammergau....

Please Help!

|||

Well, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is centrally located for the three. If you want to use the train and public transportation to access these places, use the www.bahn.de website and change it to English near the top of the page, and then play with your options. Note that the Fuessen/Hohenschwangau/Neuschwanstein area isn%26#39;t connected directly by train to these other places. By car, you should have no problems.

|||

Thanks for your response....I have just realized that the trains are all indirect and it looks like it would take hours to get around if we stayed in the area...

Do you think it would be better to stay in Munich and make the day trips from there as the trains are all direct from Munich??

It%26#39;s just that we would like to spend time outside of the city and enjoy a bit of the countryside...maybe we should stay in Munich and just have one overnight visit in the Neschwanstein area?

What do you think?

Thanks again!

|||

I think that there are buses between Fuessen and Garmisch, if so, the train schedule should also show them. They probably aren%26#39;t too frequent.

I think that staying in Hohenschwangau is an excellent idea, preferably in a hotel that has a close-up view of lit-up by night Neuschwanstein. The excellent small hotel Villa Jaegerhaus is one place I highly recommend, just click on my name for my review, and another reviewer has taken some nice photos.

If all you want to do is be in the German Alps, then also consider Mittenwald or Berchtesgaden. The latter is close to the lovely Koenigssee on which you can take scenic boat trips. I%26#39;m sure that you%26#39;d be happy in both these places or in G-P or Hohenschwangau. (Don%26#39;t worry about what you%26#39;re missing, you can%26#39;t see it all, but enjoy what you are seeing.)

|||

Direct bus service between Garmisch - Oberammergau - Hohenschwagau - Füssen is provided by RVO bus route 9606. You can download a PDF of the bus schedule at -

rvo-bus.de/site/…

Service between Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof and Füssen Bahnhof via bus and train is also possible on the VVT network. You can search schedules at -

www.vvt.at/page.cfm…

You can also use the DB website to find schedules. Travel time to the castles will be about 2 hours.

Munich Airport transportation and Car Rental question.

My question is multipart. We will be arriving in Munich on a Saturday in late August. We would like to spend a couple of days in Munich before traveling through Germany and leaving out of Berlin 2 weeks later. We have not decided on the exact itinerary yet except that we will spend the last 3 days in Berlin.

My questions are:

Should we rent a car at the airport in Munich and drive into the city?

Should we take alternate transportation into the city and rent a car at one of the city car rental offices? I understand that there is a surcharge for rentals at airports and train stations so this should save us some money.

I understand that the S Bahn is available at the airport that will go directly into the center of the city. How practical is it for 2 people each with a medium size suitcase to travel on the S Bahn?

Does anyone have recommendations for car rental companies? We will be dropping the car off in Berlin on Wednesday prior to our departure. (We don’t want a car in Berlin)

Any other advice on renting a car? Is it advisable to take the LDW or would the LDW provided by a credit card company suffice?

Thanks

|||

Taking the S-Bahn from the airport to center city is very easy and is no problem at all even with luggage. People do it all the time and there%26#39;s plenty of storage on the train.

I wouldn%26#39;t bother with a car at all while you are in Munich. Between the trains, trams, and busses, the public transport is fabulous and easy to figure out. It%26#39;s easy to spend at least a week in the center of Munich and simply walk most places, there is so much to do there.

I%26#39;ve been to Munich at least a dozen times and have only rented a car once to drive to Garmisch Partinkirchen and go to Neuschwanstein. I used SIXT and it turned out great. Beware that there will likely be a hefty drop off charge if you return other than origination city. Check the SIXT web site at www.sixt.com, or call them to find out ahead of time. (I believe when I rented from them you had to talk to them directly to find out about one way rentals.) THey can also tell you the price difference between renting at airport and in town.

I%26#39;ve never taken the LDW, your stateside car insurance should cover you. To be safe, call your insurance provider and ask before you go.

You%26#39;ll have a great time! Bavaria is marvelous.

|||

Agree with all above, but...my US car insurance does not cover my rental in Europe. My credit card (that I keep only for car rentals in Europe) does pick up the LDW as you indicated in your post. I had a rock crack the windshield last June and the credit card picked up most of the cost just like they said it would. I did have to pay a service fee, but it ended up being very reasonable to replace a windshield on a BMW.

I use Avis when I travel, they have a convenient office in Munich within 200 yards of a S bahn stop and I don%26#39;t think they charge for dropping off at an alternate location.

Good luck.

|||

Thanks for the advice. I get a corporate discount with Avis so at this point I am inclined to use them. From what I have seen on the web site there is no drop off charge within Germany. I am not sure if taking out the extra LDW is worth the peace of mind or if just using a credit card, which I have already checked that does cover the LDW would be the way to go.

|||

I agree with all prior posted answers.

No need for a car to get around Munich and parking can be annoying.

As for rentals, I would check with several firms as sometimes deals are better than even the corporate rates...in fact, corporate rates often roll in other costs that are unnecesary because your firm requires them.

Other city drop-offs can be costly and you should check when you make a res. I find it easy to try booking with same place return and get price, then recoing it with the other city and looking for difference.

Christmas Markets 09

We are thinking of visiting the markets in Berlin this year can anyone recomend a reasonably priced central hotel

|||

Markets are all over the city, the prettiest probably on Gendamenmarkt though I like the one near the Memorial church (Zoo station area) and also near the opera on Unter den Linden.

You cd compare hotel prices on venere.com or look at www.accor.com which covers the chains Mercure, Etap hotel, Ibis and Suitehotel.

The latter 3 are next to each other on Anhalter Strasse near Potsdamer Platz,which is pretty central. I%26#39;ve stayed in the Etap hotel several times; it%26#39;s the most basic ofthe lotbut still en-suite.

|||

Thanks very much ....I knew there were markets all over the place but couldn%26#39;t work out best area to stay.

|||

Try the hotel California on their web site we stay there 2 times a year. Great location on kudam. We will be there in nov for the markets.

|||

Assuming you want to do some sightseeing as well as the markets I%26#39;d suggest you stay in Mitte as there are then more sights within walking distance. Kudamm is great if shopping is very high on your list but otherwise the only major sights nearby are the memorial church, the zoo and aquaium, plus KaDeWe department store (a sight in itself).

Those accor hotels are strictly speaking in Kreuzberg but only one street from Mitte. Potsdamer Platz is near and there are winter activities there, if no actual market.

Alexanderplatz area is also good for markets (there%26#39;s one right onthe square for starters.

Last year we went out to Spandau to look at the market in the Old Town there. That%26#39;s an U- or S-Bahn ride, as is the one by Chralottenburg Palace.

|||

Thanks very much for responses................just need to go and get booked!!

|||

The Accor hotels on Anhalter Str. suggested by Lynda are perfect - I always stay there. They are right on two MetroBus routes and 3 S-Bahn routes, and about a 10-minute walk from Potsdamer Platz. Bus M41 goes from Hauptbahnhof to Anhalter Bhf in about 10 mins. The past two years there has been a Christmas market at Potsdamer Platz, but as there are 17 in Berlin, you won%26#39;t have any problems finding one.

|||

I am all about value for my dollar and staying at the nicest hotels I can afford.

We are headed to Berlin to kick off our Christmas Market trip and I snagged a room at Melia Berlin for 80E a night.

Priceline offers Marriott for an average of 75 USD per night.

We like the luxury of a nicer hotel and therefore these would be my personal preference. biddingfortravel.com has a lot of information on bidding for hotels in Berlin.

Honeymoon

Hello,

my fiancé and I are planning our honeymoon (14-16 days, but flexible) and we were thinking about starting in Munich. From Munich we would like to travel to either Austria or Switzerland and then take a cheap flight to London (2-3 days), then Eurostar to Paris (2-3 days) and finish with a cheap flight or night train to Barcelona (4 days). We realize that it will be busy, but we%26#39;ve been to London and Paris before so we don%26#39;t have to see everyting again.

We are wondering:

-Should we go to Austria (ex: Salzburg maybe) or Switzerland?

-How many days we should stay in each places (starting in Munich)?

Any suggestions?

thanks!

|||

We love Salzburg and it would certainly be a nice contrast to the other stops on your list, mostly big cities.

It is a quick 90 minutes by train from Munich and an excellent base for daytrips to the Salzkammergut region, which is stunning!

I have only visited a few spots in Switzerland and found it very expensive - much preferred Germany and Austria (7th trip).

I do think that is a lot of territory to cover but to each his own.

|||

Salzburg is a great place, romantic, after all it is your honeymoon. Stay in the old town for its lovely ambience in a hotel like the Blaue Gans or Elefant. Take a carriage ride. Split the speciality Salzberger Nockerl for dessert. What%26#39;s nice about Salzburg is that it is a lovely small city that sits literally on the doorstep of both the Austrian and German Alps. There%26#39;s a lot of interesting fun things to do there, such as a visit to the bishop%26#39;s water garden where he liked to play tricks on his guests with water, the unforgettable ice caves by Werfen (nice castle also), a visit to the underground salt mine from either the Austrian or German side, a boat ride amidst the wonderful scenery on the Koenigssee, perhaps a Sound of Music tour, or other visits into the nearby mountains. It%26#39;s an excellent place to spend a week or more. From Salzburg you can get to London inexpensively with Ryanair.

Where to go!

I%26#39;ve been to Germany a number of times but I have been Berlin too many times now (Not a bad thing) and I have been to Dresden.

I%26#39;m thinking of going to Germany again in the summer or possibly next winter but I want opinions on which cities are worth visiting.

I know I%26#39;m asking an impossible question as everyone has their own opinions about which city is better.

Here are some ideas

For example, always wanted to go to Munich not for Oktoberfest. Does Munich have many other beer festivals or do any other cities have better festivals. Are there many ski resorts in close proximity to Munich so I can go skiing for a day. Is Munich worth a short 2-3 day break?

Cologne, I can easily get to Brussells by train from London and then get to Cologne by train. Cologne looks nice from what I%26#39;ve seen and a friend has recommended it to.

Hamburg, The Beatles made their name there, it has got a good nightlife.

Karlsruhe, I%26#39;ve got a friend there

I just want a few opinions on what city is worth visiting or what places off the beaten track is worth visiting? Any ideas would be great: )

|||

Munich is a beautiful city and worth of a 2-3 day visit. The area within 2 hours of Munich has a lifetime of things to see and do.

From Munich you can go to:

Garmisch

Fuessen and the Neuschwanstein %26amp; Hohenschwangau castles

the Wieskirche

Regensburg

Passau

Salzburg

Chiemsee (castle Herrenchimsee)

Berchtesgaden (Konigsee, church in the Ramsau, Eaglesnest, Maria Gern)

Augsburg

Weltenberg (brewing beer at the monastery since 1050)

Many lakes and cathederals to see, drive the alpenstrasse, go skiing in Garmisch, go to Landshut,

or Mittenwald. Take the train to Innsbruck..

All pretty much within 2 hours of Munich...and I am sure I left out a bunch...so grab a book on Bavaria and map it out!

|||

Since you mentioned beer festivals, Munich%26#39;s is the world%26#39;s largest, and Stuttgart%26#39;s ( www.cannstatter-volksfest.de ) the world%26#39;s second largest from late September to early October. (Unlike Munich, however, there is little price gouging by the Stuttgart hotels.) Stuttgart ( www.stuttgart-tourist.de ) also has a very large wine festival ( www.stuttgarter-weindorf.de probably only in German) in late August early September, and the world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival ( www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de only in German) from late April to early May. Then there is the Christmas Market ( www.stuttgarter-weihnachtsmarkt.de only in German) which is one of Europe%26#39;s oldest, largest, most visited, and most beautiful with all the stalls highly decorated and in a lovely setting by the palace square, the Old Palace, the New Palace and the Stiftskirche (old church).

Some excellent things to see and do in Stuttgart, birthplace of the automobile:

Mercedes Benz Museum

Porsche Museum

other excellent museums such as the Staatsgallerie for art, Linden Museum for ethnology, Museum am Loewentor for local dinosaur and Ice Age fossils, Wuerttemberg Museum in the Old Palace for history up to the early 1800s, etc.

Wilhelma ( www.wilhelma.de ) Europe%26#39;s largest combined zoo-botanical garden set amidst the nice Moorish architecture of this former palace

walk around the city center with the palaces, churches, opera house, Markthalle with sights and smells of gourmet foods from around the world, etc.

world%26#39;s first modern TV tower, has a viewing platform

three large mineral baths associated with western Europe%26#39;s largest mineral waters

world reknown ballet and Germany%26#39;s opera house of the year 6 out of the last 11 years

panoramic walks about the steep valley walls

extensive vineyards ( www.stuttgarter-weinwanderweg.de only in German) with nice walks through them with wineries, Weinstube%26#39;s and Besenwirtschaft%26#39;s along the way

Weissenhofseidlung where world-famous architects designed houses for a 1927 architectural exhibition

15 minutes away by public transportation in the form of the S-bahn are: Esslingen ( www.esslingen.de ) with its well preserved medieval center; and Ludwigsburg ( www.ludwigsburg.de ) with Germany%26#39;s largest perfectly preserved (all original) Baroque Palace (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de along with the Stuttgart palaces, Wilhelma, and other excellent places operated by the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg), the Swabian Versailles, with the longest and best European palace tour I%26#39;ve been on, four excellent museums, extensive gardens, porcellan manufacture and sales (Ludwigsburg Porcellan celebrated their 250th anniversary last year), and two smaller associated palaces set near a deer park (several days to see it all).

Venturing slightly further away, any of the towns at the ends of the 6 S-bahn lines are enjoyable to visit for a few hours: such as Weil der Stadt, birthplace of the mathematician/astronomer Keppler; Marbach birthplace of the poet Schiller (250th anniversary of his birth this year, so some special activities); and Schorndorf birthplace of the automobile inventor Daimler. All have museums dedicated to their favorite sons.

Slightly further away and accessable by train: the old college town of Tuebingen ( www.tuebingen.de )with its hilly cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, castle, interesting nontourist shops, and one of Europe%26#39;s oldest universities (our favorite place in Germany to repeatedly visit) and nextdoor well preserved medieval Bebenhausen Monastery (in www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de ); Metzingen ( www.Metzingen.de ) which has Germany%26#39;s most factory outlets for some inexpensive shopping; Bad Urach ( www.badurach.de ) a lovely old mountain valley town: etc.

With a car, there are many other places that become easily accessable such as my favorite area of Germany, the Swabian Alb ( www.schwaebischealb.de ) with its many castles and caves and excellent cliffside scenery; the Black Forest ( www.schwarzwald-tourismus.de ); the walled cities of the Romantic Road; etc.

For other interesting places to visit in and around Stuttgart, just click on my name for my many forum posts for this area of Germany.

From the UK, Stuttgart is inexpensively accessable by Germanwings ( www.germanwings.com ) and TUIfly ( www.tuifly.com ), and there are other airlines serving Stuttgart.

Thats great advice from you both. Thats really appreciated.

1 Day in the black forest

We are starting our trip of at Baden-baden and plannin on heading down to titisee and then evenyually to Germisch to spend the night there.

What are the most important spots to see along the way?

We are planning on purchasing a Cuckoo clock.

So any feedback on the best place to buy with decent prices would be much appreciated.

|||

I am not sure how you are travelling so i assume you will be in a car. Avoid the dull motorway south from Baden Baden and drive down the B500 instead, the road runs along a ridge with views across the Rhine valley and across to Strasbourg. I would head to Freudenstadt and then down to Schiltach. Schiltach is a lovely village with wooden framed buildings, really nice we stayed here for a week. Plana route then down through Triberg for the touristy Cuckoo clocks and then down to Titisee. Again we stayed close to Titisee and really enjoyed the area, great restaurants overlooking the lake. Prices were very good as there are quite a few places competing.

Have a look at the route planning site www.viamichelin.com

Titisee town web site titisee.de/servlet/…index.html

Its a long way to Garmish lets hope you have enough time to take in all the sites. Try the Rhine Falls just over the border of Switzerland near Schaffhausen, Konstanz, Lindau, Fussen for Neuschwanstein Castle, Oberamergau, Garmish. Most towns in Germany will have a tourist web site just try www.townname.de

If want anymore info let me know.

|||

Driving alone will be about 6 hours according to www.viamichelin.com . That probably doesn%26#39;t give you much time to stop along the way to do anything except buy your cuckoo clock (possibly Triberg) and eat. The B500 route will allow you to see some of the Black Forest from your car. Hohentwiel by Singen is Germany%26#39;s largest castle ruin, perched atop a former volcano, but climbing it takes a while. The whole of the Lake Constance area is nice, Meersburg is the loveliest town on the lake with Germany%26#39;s oldest castle. You%26#39;ll also be driving by Neuschwanstein Palace by Fuessen. But you could easily take a week making this drive.

Bus service

We are planning a trip to Ruhpolding in July. We intend to go walking and wondered what the public transport to the start of walks is like. will we need a car to be flexible or are the bus services plentiful in the area? We wouldnt want to have to hurry the walk to get the last bus back by say 4pm. (The reason for the question is that we have been to some walking areas that werent serviced by buses and others where they do run buses but not very regularly).

|||

As far as you can reach a place by train you don%26#39;t have to fear that the last one is around 4pm.

bus network southern Bavaria

rvo-bus.de/site/…gesamtplan__oberbayern.pdf

really of interest is only the bus line 9506 Reit im Winkel - Ruhpolding - Inzell

rvo-bus.de/site/…9506.pdf

Reit im Winkel -%26gt; Ruhpolding: the last bus departs at Reit im Winkel exactly at 4pm

Inzell -%26gt; Ruhpolding: there are buses after 4pm

But also with cable cars etc. it%26#39;s quite normal in the Alps that these close for the day between 4pm and 5pm.

You can use the DB timetable to query also for the bus times.

Munich - Fussen - Stuttgart on 6th June on RE train

Hey all,

I would like some opinions on the traveling rout of munich to fussen to stuttgart on 6th june.

We are a group of 4, intending to leave munich hbf at about 10am, traveling to fussen (neuschwanstein) reaching at about 1pm and then leaving neuschwanstein at 2.45pm to stuttgart reaching at about 7.26pm. We will be using RE %26amp; Bus. May i know if we will be able to use the schoneswochenende ticket since it is on a saturday?

Also on this route, would there be anything in terms of view on the RE trains? According to bahn.de, the train leaving fussen will pass by buchloe, memmingen and ulm...

We intend to leave our bags at the fussen train station, does anyone know how much does it cost and how big are the lockers? we will be having 3 40L backpacks.

Advice please. Thank you!

|||

If you take the connection

Munich Hbf dep 09:51

you%26#39;ll arrive in

Hohenschwangau arr 12:13

Which may however indeed mean that you could be a the castle at 1pm.

Memmingen

http://www.memmingen.de/593.html

Ulm

tourismus.ulm.de/tourismus/en/index.php

You%26#39;ll arrive however too late to climb on the cathedral tower. Last admission in June is at 17:45.

%26gt; anyone know how much does it cost

EUR 2-3

%26gt; and how big are the lockers? we will be having 3 40L backpacks.

Depends if their are only small lockers (large enough for a 60-70 l backpack) or also big ones (large enough for all 3 - EUR 4-5).

|||

%26quot;Also on this route, would there be anything in terms of view on the RE trains? %26quot;

You should be able to see the world%26#39;s highest church spire in Ulm, and as you%26#39;re leaving town possibly some of the Wilhelmsburg fortifications constructed in the 1800s. The train route then crosses the Swabian Alb which is usually nice, but I%26#39;ve never been along this part of the route. There should be some castles along the way. At Plochingen, try to get a view of Hundertwasser%26#39;s architecturally interesting famous apartment complex on the right. Then you should start to pass the vineyards, and the well preserved medieval center of Esslingen. From Plochingen on, the best views are out the right side windows.

|||

Thanks for the replies :) greatly appreciated!

I will be trying to sit on the right side of the train!

I think you guys missed out my question of using a schoneswochenende ticket. Does this ticket work on buses as well?

|||

%26gt; I think you guys missed out my question of using a schoneswochenende ticket. Does this ticket work on buses as well?

That was the most complicated question ;-)

Happy Weekend Ticket covers only some %26quot;Verkehrsverbünde%26quot; (local public transport authorities). E.g. the MVV in Munich and the VVS in Stuttgart. There all local public transport, thus also buses, is covered.

http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/index.html

http://www.vvs.de/en/index.php

The buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau are however not covered. With the applying OVG tariff a ticket for 4-5 km is EUR 1,80.

|||

hey abalada, thanks for the reply. May i know where can i get tickets for the bus? and if i have 4 people with me, is the price 1.8 multiplied by 4? Also, 1.80 euros is a single way cost?

airports

What is the difference between the different airports in Berlin? I have run across several (Tegel TXL, Schoenefeld SXF, Tempel hof THF, and Berlin BER)

|||

Berlin BER is used by some systems to find connections to all Berlin Airports.

You have only 2 options: Tegel and Schönefeld airport

Tempelhof was shut down last October

Flights from the US go normally to Tegel.

Just choose the ones which offers the best flight options for you.

There are no other criteria which would give one a worthwhile advantage compared to the other one.

Thank you so much for the info.

Tegel is a small airport and very easy to navigate. It also has good connections to the center of town by bus. It is always my choice when flying into Berlin.

train travel

I need to get to Nuremberg after flying into Munic or Franfurt. How long does it take and what is the cost? Is one to be prefererd? Thanks for your help. Also, what is a bahn card and how is it used or purchased?

Munich is the nicer airport.

Also cheaper if you us the Bavaria Ticket to Nuremberg.

This is a day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria. Plus nearly all other local public transport. E.g. the buses from the airport to Freising station. And the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Nuremberg.

Bavaria Ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day
