When I am visiting a country I like to try the favorite local dishes.
Could someone please tell me the favorite dishes of Germany. I know of wiener schnitzel, but I would like to know of others.
I don%26#39;t care about how unhealthy they are since I find the best ones probably are not the healthiest, but I am on vacation, and want to know the really good dishes.

Try Kaiserschmarr%26#39;n (a dessert); Zweibelrostbraten; Jagerschnitzel; Bauernschmaus.
Oh and the various sausages, of course.
Bear in mind you%26#39;re not talking Germany but Bavaria if you go to Munich! (see the difference even in language e.g. broetchen [German for bread roll] and semmel [Bavarian for bread roll])

Wiener Schnitzel? Wien is in Austria...
Local cuisine in Germany varies widely from region to region, so it is the Bavarian cuisine that is of interest here.
Bavarian food involves a lot of meat - pork, beef, and for more upscale dishes, veal. Vegetables are rare on traditional Bavarian plates.
The notorious Eisbein/Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) is disgusting IMHO but if you must... ;-)
Roasts are probably a better alternative.
Schweinsbraten mit Kartoffelknödeln - pork roast with potato dumplings and sauce
Sausages come in all shapes, sizes and varieties.
A Munich speciality are Weißwürste (white sausages) with sweet mustard, these are eaten in the morning.
If you want a cold lunch on a warm day, try a Wurstsalat (sausage salad) with bread or fried potatoes.
Schupfnudeln/Fingernudeln (thick pasta made from a flour and potato dough), fried in a pan with sauerkraut and bacon. Sounds weird but is really yummy. These are most popular in baden-Württemberg but also known in Bavaria.
Fleischpflanzerl, also named Frikadellen (North Germany), Buletten (Berlin), Bratklops (Prussia), Bremsklotz (brake block - students%26#39; slang in university mensas) - fried meat balls are popular all over the country.
Visit at least one bakery and at least one butcher%26#39;s shop. For the butcher, I%26#39;d recommend Schlemmermeyer in Viktualienmarkt.

Schweinsaxe at Haxenbauer is really fabulous IMO
Do try it, it%26#39;s just around the corner from Marienplatz. I think the problem with this dish in some places, and variations in Austria is that you get soggy cracklingand then I dislike it.
It needs to be spit roasted and well prepared, the above restaurant does it very well, lots of crispy cracking and soft meat within.
Viktualienmarkt is a must visit, the butchers as recommended but also lots of Bavarian fast food in and around the market as well as a really good beer garden with local flavour.
For the schitzel, it is from Vienna but Ratskeller (on Marienplatz) does a particularly nice one, as good as any I had in Vienna. I can%26#39;t say the same for their knuckle, avoid that there but most other local dishes ae excellent.

..all above are good examples... the Haxnbauer is nice and when you walk past the rotisseries you will start salivationg so book this one at least 24 hours in advance and go there with an empty tummy... but i find food in Munich even at sausage stalls tends to be of a good quality and very tasty so even the tourist traps like the Hofbrauhaus serve decent and well priced food... you even have super quality bakers in underground stations... the word for snack is ImbiB... so follow your nose... Bavarians arent big on Thai or fusion foods so you will have no difficulty in enjoying local cuisine. Remember local cuisine in Bavaria is not %26#39;fancy%26#39;... its hearty food of above average portions at reasonable prices... look out for wild boar ragu etc... we love our gamey meat stews... and the best beer in Munich must be Augustiner or some of the smaller ones like Tegernsee or Andechs... but its all delicious from the tap... Prosit!

Hmmm, lovely Augustiner.
When in Viktualienmarkt, also take a beer across at Pschorr, on the Schranenhalle, it%26#39;s by the market.
The Edelhell in that place is up there with the best as well, IMO. Also a pleasant terrace to people watch in good weather.

Try some Leberkaese, either in a Restaurant or go a Butcher ( Metzgerei)on a Tuesday when they have everything fresh( in Bavaria). The also have great Prosciuto. My faforite is Lachsschinken. German cold cuts are dryer then what you find in the US. Gulsch soup or Ochsenschwanz ( Oxtail)soup. Leberknoedel soup ( dumplings w. Liver)Nueremberger bratwurst ( Brats) , they are skinnier then the regular and roasted over pine cones. Oh boy do I miss those.German chocolate is great, try some Potatoe chips with paprica.
To save money, you can go to any Butcher and they%26#39;ll make sandwiches on a roll.(very cheap)Try some potatoe salat, each region has a different way, warm or cold, either with Mayo or vinegrette. In Restaurants if you find rolls or bread on the table, be aware that they will charge you for each.
Got to stop because I am getting hungry

If you like chocolate:
Just go to a supermarket and buy some.
Milka, RitterSport or everything with the name Kinder (KinderRiegel, KinderPingui, ...) - these are very good choices.

The Ritter Sport candy bars are best purchased at their sales room at the factory in Waldenbuch near Stuttgart. They%26#39;ll have all their types at discount prices. They also have a small museum on chocolate manufacture, and an interesting excellent art museum of art in the form of squares (their candy bar shape), some of which moves. They also have a nice very popular program for children to create their own candy bar and the wrappings for it.

we enjoyed the many different venison dishes offered in Germany. Ragouts, filets of venison, etc, all were excellent!
