Bamberg or Regensburg

Deciding on which to visit for a couple of days between Salzburg and flight home from Frankfort? These are the leading contenders--any thoughts on which we should choose. I am a big beer person, which I think favors Bamberg.....

No easy decision.

With a couple of days you could do a trip from Regensburg the nearby Danube Gorge and Weltenburg monastery. The oldest monastery brewery on the planet founded in 1050. Excellent beer.

Train/bus to Kelheim, boat through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg.

Now we have even a draw on the beer front ;-)

Regensburg and Weltenberg would be my choice as well.

|||

From Bamberg it is an easily rail journey to Kulmbach, which is also known for its beer. I don%26#39;t know if all are still in business, but I once saw a blurb for Kulmbach that mentioned the town had 13 breweries.

|||

Thanks for the suggestions. On the other hand, I%26#39;m beginning to think we need to stop in both Regensburg and Bamberg, and may have to adjust out itinerary....

|||

You cannot go wrong with either of the two.

Do you prefer medieval (Regensburg) or baroque architecture (Bamberg)?

|||

More than anything, Blandine, I%26#39;m flattered that you think I can distinguish the two types of architecture....! I think I%26#39;ve decided to get to both places, actually, thanks for the suggestion.

|||

For beer, you best bet is indeed Bamberg. Second would be Regensburg.

Kulmbach would be a distant third.

But all are nice towns to visit.

And since you are in to beer (I also am a %26quot;beer tourist%26quot;), I strongly advise you to get a copy of the book %26quot;Good Beer Guide Germany%26quot; by Steve Thomas. I don%26#39;t know how I made do without it!!

|||

Thanks, milwcu, will try and get a copy of that book.

LOL Rutgers! There are more than enough people who declare they despise anything baroque... On the other hand, there are enough others who think everything before 1800 is medieval... I think you%26#39;ll see the differences when you are there, for example comparing the two old town halls.

Wise decision to visit both! Bamberg and Regensburg are among the very few cities in Germany which have not, or hardly, been affected by World War II air raids and still possess intact and authentic historical centres.

In Regensburg, visit Historische Wurstküche for a local food experience, the oldest eatery in town (they claim to have been in business for 850 years) and have, for example, %26quot;6 auf Kraut%26quot; - six grilled sausages on sauerkraut. Regensburg%26#39;s sausages are a bit bigger than those in Nürnberg but not much - in other words, the size of a finger. And a local rye beer. The place is located next to the old bridge, impossible to miss. Best in good weather when you can sit outside on the quay.

In Bamberg, the Rauchbier (smoked beer) is a must.

You are making it impossible for me to get any work done, Blandinde, what with this talk of rauchbier, rye beer and sausages. Due to your suggestions, as well as Abalada%26#39;s, it appears that Cesky Krumlov has been discarded (too remote for only one night...), in favor of multiple stops in Germany. Question: we will be coming from Prague, do you think it%26#39;s crazy to do two nights in Regensburg,then 2 nights in Salzburg followed by two nights in Bamberg, given that we%26#39;re doing some backtracking..... (leaving from Frankfurt)? Thanks.
