From Berlin to Luxembourg by train - stopover?

I will be leaving Berlin on Sunday and need to be in Luxembourg on Tuesday. I will be traveling by train. I%26#39;m wondering if you can help me decide where I could have a stopover on Monday night that%26#39;s worth visiting? I don%26#39;t mind if I deviate from the direct route, but it must be somewhere I can get to by train. Any ideas? Other than Cologne, I%26#39;ve not been able to come up with anything.

Cologne is for sure an option.

also on the direct route:

Autostadt/Phaeno in Wolfsburg

Trier (Germany%26#39;s oldest city)

Instead of the direct trains from Cologne to Trier you could travel through the Rhine and Mosel Valley.

Thanks for the suggestions. I revised my plans now and will be stopping in Cologne on the way to Berlin, so I was thinking of going via Fulda on the way back. Do you think this is a wise choice?

I%26#39;m definitely adding Trier to my itinerary, in fact I%26#39;m planning to stay in Trier overnight instead of Luxembourg as it%26#39;s a lot cheaper :-)

Personally I like Fulda very much.

Luxembourg is nice, but the sights of Trier are really in a different league.

You can buy a day ticket from Trier to Luxembourg (the whole country - not just the city) for EUR 10,80.

Covers the buses in Trier, the regional trains to Luxembourg, all trains and buses inside Luxembourg.

Thank you for recommending Fulda - I stopped there on the way back and loved it!

Also agree about Trier - much prettier and more interesting than Luxembourg City, and the trains were a doddle to use. Many thanks again.
